valentine one is the only way to go
but they don't do much use around here cause our CHP usually just follows you and judges your speed instead of using their radars. They will be usefull on the 5 going down to san diego or up to frisco area though.
and the arcadia PD and such use them on occasions

I have a Bel 980, which is either the top of the line or one of, and I like it. The V1 is big bucks.
I paid $225 6 months ago but saw it selling on Ebay alot cheaper.
If I had to do it again, I would research for a wireless one. This one is a pain, since it has to be plugged in. Will be seeing about hard wiring it but if I do that, it will have to go on the driver's side visor on the far left (by the door). I am not sure if it will work there and cannot check it since the cord does not stretch that far..

That's what I heard too about California and radar. They use them in some places and other times CHP does not. If it would be helpful, get the V1, it's worth the dollars.
But everytime I drive in CA, I don't pickup any police at all and that would be mostly in San Diego and across to Las Vegas.

I have paid no more than $100 for both of the ones that I have. The last one I got was from Radio Shack, $99.99. I talks and does all kinds of other things that you don't need it to do. It is probably made by one of the leading brands. They just sell them for less with the Radio Shack name. I love it. I forget the details on my old one. I think it is a Whistler, $69.99 or $79.99. NEver had any trouble with it either. My friend just bought his girfriend a BEll for $185, she hates it. V1 is a little high for me. I have no experience so I can't say much. It will tell you the direction the radar/laser is coming from. Helpful, yeah maybe a little. If the thing beeps, who gives a shit where he is, slow down. It's not that hard.

I have had 3 of them. A V1, & K40, & currently using an Escort 8500. The 8500 is the better one in my area. The V1 is 2nd, & the K40 is third. I do not like the V1. It a good detector, but it's big, bulky, & a little outdated. Not to mention it's expensive. Any of the top brands Bel, Escort etc will do. Most of the high end units just add features. Like programming, or traffic saftey, & weather alearts etc. For what you want, I don't think you need to spend that much. Ebay is a good place. Just find someone that sells them & look for alot of good feedback.

CHP -- those guys on the freeway handling out tickets.
BTW -- they are a great judge of speed *and* unlike years past, are using radar...
V1 with remote: don't leave home without it...

As far as I know, in CA the radar they use are the gun type right? Given the speed the radar travel to and back, wouldn't the moment he or she tags u, ur dead??

Sorry about the ticket man!! I just got pulled over myself for doing around 83 mph on the 101 but only got a warning. Radars are not really good in LA.

AS far as being close to an instant on (without warning) -- sure, you are going to get tagged way before the V1 squawks.
If anyone thinks that a V1 or radar detector is some kind of magic shield, they are in for a rude awakening...

I can assure you that when used as a "tool" (even in urban areas of LA), they can be quite helpful, despite the various false alerts generated even in full-logic mode.
I hope you know that the LA police, in car units, are using both instant-on and continuous mode radar (in more areas that one would ever suspect)…
It’s just a tool, not a panacea
