Work from home at the age of 25+.
Ins companies seem to love it when you rarely have to commute to work, dont know why though.

Don't do the LoJack route. From what my isnurance agent tells me 1) it's not worth it if you finance a car since the insurance covers it and 2) the cost of the LoJack doens't justify the savings that comes with it...

I don't know about NJ, but in NY you can take that defensive driving course and get 10% off your liability. You can vin# etching to reduce 5% on your theft. Other than that go with e1828's ideas.

Get married or turn 30. That's when you get a nice drop. Where in NJ are you? I lived in Springfield and then moved to Freehold. I thought living further away from NYC would drop my rates. Instead, they went up $150.

You arne't getting killed unless you are 20-21, having 500 dollars of car payments a month, 330 dollars of insurance a month, and the parents are nowhere in sight!

25 is when you issurance is lowered for guys, it's like 20 or something for women.

Moving can help, can you issurance agency and ask them about different areas and the rates. I know for myself living in Milwaukee county increases my rates immensely compared to living in a `burb.

Getting marriage (HAH!!!) helps also, so does the etching and driving courses mentioned earlier.

Probably your best bet is to actually call your agent and ask him/her what you can do.

Anyone have an idea how much do premiums go up (% wise) when you file for a insurance claim?

Depends is the claim your fault (you caused the accident) or not?

If it's not your fault if the damage is not over a certain amount you won't go up. For example I just made a no fault claim and mine didn't go up because it was under my deductable (sp?) plus $900 so (500+900=1400) which is more then it cost ($1300).

Hope this helps some.

One thing I did when I was "young" and in Boston, MA was put my dad as the primary driver and me at 10% driver (some thing like that). That kept my insurance real low because it was basically my dad (over 60 with no tickets at all) on the insurance with my name tacked on the policy. Don't know if all states allow this still. Of course, I was still living with my parents back then, so if you are home alone than you can't do this.

It also helped that I knew my agent and he hooked me up. He gave me "low mileage" discount even though it wasn't, and other minor discounts. "passive alarm" helps (meaning your alarm arms itself). You definitely get more and more discounts as you get older. At 25 perhaps a little discount, at 30, BIG discounts!

If you have zero points and no tickets ever, some insurance companies (like State Farm) give bigger discounts for having that kind of record, some don't. Nationwide Insurance gave me a "Good Driver" discount, which saved me a couple a hundred easy.

I'm also from NJ and called some insurance companies looking for a quote on a Type S. The lowest I got was $5023, and the highest was like $6000 !! I'm 22 (23 in December), with no points and just 2 parking tickets.

What insurance companies do you guys have and how much are you paying per month?

BTW...I live in the NEW stolen car capital in the nation: Jersey City

If you have home owners/renters insurance with the same insurance company, you get a huge discount. When I turned 25 I got a large discount, when I turned 30 it was even larger. With Allstate, I have a new car discount, safe driver discount, preferred equipment discount, etc. which comes to a premuim of about $680/year.

Also, I don't really recommend this, but if you raise your deductible really high it will save you quite a bit. If you have to file a claim though, you'll be paying big bucks out of your own pocket.

join the military and insure it through USAA.
I've got three speeding tickets, two failure to obey a traffic sign, and a parking ticket. no driving schools ( unless they count Skip Barber ). I pay 2400 a year with a five hundred dollar deductable.

I pay about $1500 / year ($250 ded / $250 comp) through GEICO, but I'm probably going to pay more next year since I was involved in a fender bender accident (at fault) that bent my front fender more than it hurt the other car. I learned a new lesson in physics today, do not travel 5 mph down a 60 degree hill in SF and try to stop.

Brakes don't work too well on hills.

Now I'm trying to figure out how much my premiums are going to increase... =)

Try www.lowestpremium.com. I'm 24 and I have 4 tickets and an accident on my record and I was paying $450 a month insurance through Fireman's fund. Now, an insurance agent called me and offered $195 a month (Allstate). That is a hell of a savings...it's like getting a raise.

Geico is a very evil insurance company, their advertising is now all warm and fuzzy but they do a lot of shitty things like giving free laser and radar equipment to the police. They're not that nice when it's time for them to pay up and plenty of companies are cheaper and better. . .

Been with GEICO since 1984. Never had a problem. Why is that a problem for me in Kansas if they provide traffic radar to LEO in Maryland? I don't even know if they are still doing this. But I do know that police with radar is the only thing standing between a crazy, speeding idiot and a horrilbe fatal collision.

I'm 24, and just got married. If I were to pick up a CLS, which I'm seriously considering , my premium would be $1400.00 a year with $500 deductibles on a CLS and a 2001 Olds. Alero GLS. I live in NW Indiana, which is considered by insurance companies as the 'Chicagoland area'; i.e. a higher risk area. All in all, not too shabby of a premium price...

I have my insurance through Progressive, whom I totally recommend!!! They'll treat you right, if you have a good driving record, from what I've heard...

The reasons why my premium is good...

Got married...

Have more than one car for the multi-car discount. It makes a HUGE difference! I mean a HUGE difference...

Don't get a ticket!

I'm not 25 yet, but Progressive said it'd make MAYBE a 10% difference on my premium when I turn. The next big age, they said is 32. The big discounts come with the marriage and multiple cars.

The CLS is a damn nice car, but it's not worth several thousands of dollars in insurance, that's for sure.

I am 32, have one speeding ticket on my record and pay $1288/yr ($94/month) through Liberty Mutual...used to pay less than $900/yr living in Maine (on an Integra) with State Farm but their prices in NJ are waaayy higher. I get a group discount from Liberty Mutual (~10%) for being in the RU alumni Assn. If you belong to an alumni assn., AAA, or some kind of group see of they have any programs with one of the insurance companies...It definitely saved me some $$$. These NJ rates are nuts, especially for young drivers with no tickets... Good Luck!

I believe State Farm is pulling out of NJ because their business is not profitable there. Hmmmm.... How much money do these guys want to make?

I'm pretty sure that parking tickets don't count towards your insurance premium. If you have a clean record, I suggest you try GEICO. GEICO does have the lowest rates, but ONLY if you have a clean record. I have one speeding ticket and they wanted $4,500 per 6 months for the 2001 CL-S. As for getting married, I'd rather pay the extra $$$$ than to deal with marriage. HEHE J/K...

I have gotten TONS of tickets and license suspensions since I was 16. I bet i have more tix than anyone on this board. Now I am 29 and I just got married and I just bought my CLS. My last car was a 1992 BMW 535i 4 door. My insurance went down when i turned 25, it went down again when i got married and it went down again when i told the insurance company i work from home...(they like that b/c you are out on the road less and the chances of getting in an accident go down). I was paying about $150/month for full coverage under StateFarm with my BMW. I just got the CLS 3 months ago and with Full 100/300 coverage (its a lease) my insurance actually went DOWN!!! My payments are 106/mo. I couldnt believe it!
