Icebox vs removed resonator/k&N

I bought an CT icebox. Installed it today. I had a removed resonator & K&N filter before this. The Icebox is actually quieter then the setup I had.

For power, I see no difference in driving. Maybe the power difference will show up on a dyno, but not daily driving.

I'll update this thread in a few weeks with more driving. However I did 100 miles today & it was in the 70's & I didn't notice any difference.

I do have the CT foam filter in there. I did not like the K&N when I swapped that on my old CLS. Besides the foam filter fits like a glove where the K&N replacement filter was a bit hard to fit right.

Also note, This is the 1st product I got since CT changed hands & resumed production. The quality of the plastic pieces is not what it used to be. At least not on the Icebox I got. Everything fit fine, but the molds were very air bubbly & some pieces looked almost spray painted.
CT did have to make these though I waited a few weeks for them. Maybe CT rushed the production of this run?

I love my icebox.

I HATE!!!! the way AEM sounds.

When your intake is louder than your exhaust, theres a problem.

if your not going to buy a drop in filter then theres almost no point in removing the resonator. the combination gives you the most air flow. now instead of your resonator restricting air flow, its your filter. plus your filter will get dirtier more often now.
spending 40 on the drop in is cheaper than getting a CT icebox with similar gains. shop around online, i got mine for less then 30 i think.

if i were you i would send it back or sell it. basically you saw no gains except for it being a little quieter. ill stick with my ghetto box intake.

Just a K&N drop in isn't going to be much of an improvement (what I'm running), but the removal of the intake resonator will help a bit more...

Quality issues [b]might[b] be because they are outsourcing the production or at least that's what usually happens when someone buys out an existing brand.

Was CT's stuff made in the US before ??

Fuzzy, the packaging should have said where it was made...

I don't see it being worth it. It's a tight fit to get it on the tube, & it doesn't sit as well as the foam filter. The foam filter has the stud that goes into the groove & keeps it secure inside the box. The K&N doesn't.

I may sell it in a month or 2. Not sure yet. I look at it as $ already spent.

I purchased and still love the icebox for the reasons you guys say you don't like it So this shows everyone has different needs for their mods...

I <3 the fact that its quite as stock, cause lets face it I didn't buy a boy racer car. I bought a luxury coupe and I want it to sound that way. Plus im not sure whats involved in removing the resonator but I didn't want to hack up any stock parts

put a k&n on it and remove the resonator on the pipe leading to the throttle body, that will give you more sound. i don't know, the k&n fits fine for me... its snug on the tube, but nothing that makes me cringe installing it.

also the icebox using the velocity stack principle. also i believe the cone has much more surface space to suck in air than the panel filter. i'm not saying it will give huge gains over the modded stock box. for someone just doing intake/exhaust, the icebox may not be worth it. but once you start increasing modifications, i think the stock box would become a hindrance.

as far as quality control... i hate to see their headers now! i'm glad i have an original set.

I've been searching for a d.i.y. resonator removal and can't find anything. I know how much people on this board bitch and moan when the same question is asked over and over but I honestly can't find it. I just dropped in the k&n and want to remove the resonator. Can anyone just post the link, I'd appreciate it.

AEM & CT's instructions from their websites have them as part of the stock removal process. Also there should be intake DIY's in the FAQ with the info. With any CAI you have to remove the resonator so any of those procedures will work.

You remove the lower panel, unbolt 2 bolts & push it through the hole & your done.

I didn't notice a difference when I removed my resonator with a drop in BUT I did notice a pretty good difference with my Injen CAI.

I would send the icebox back since you are unhappy with it and pick up an Injen or AEM CAI. See if you notice a difference then..

Either way with any intake the "butt dyno" isn't accurate at all. It's a small gain.

removal is soo easy. I did it while my car was jacked up for a coolant drain. I was just kinda messing around and just pulled it out.

jack up the front; turn the wheel to the right all the way; just look around at the top around the filter box and start unscrewing bolts with your 10mm.; the resonator will come out the wheelwell, you need to remove part of the wheelwell which is held by plastic clips; i believe there is one last 10mm bolt you need to remove through the wheelwell. the resonator looks like a black plastic square box. with all the bolts out make sure to wiggle the resonator to make sure all the bolts are off. then start pulling down. mine was a real bi*** to get out, very tight fit but i think it maybe due to a front end collision. overall the process is very easy and very fast. easier than a oil change.
