Help with fog light replacement

Okay, I know I'm not the most mechanically inclined, but I figured this would the a good first mod since I can't stand the damn fogs in our car. So I ordered the PIAA 19224 and got them today. I read the post on FAQ web site on how to replace them but I can't even get to the damn screw to take the things out let along get it back in?!?!? What is the secret here or is there another way of doing it?? And for those who want to laugh at me, go ahead, I don't mind being the butt of the joke as long as I get these stupid fogs out!!!!

I got under the car and took one of the plastic "push through" pegs that holds the black plastic cover to the bumper. I then pushed it aside and it exposed the back of the fog. I just twisted the back of the light socket and replaced the bulb. Making sure I never touched the PIAA with my bare hand. It works for both sides. I hope this helps. I don't have any pics to post, so if this seems confusing let me know, and I will try and explain it better.

Okay, well that didn't work unless I tried taking th ewrong "Peg" out. I tried prying it out with a flat head screw driver and the head of the peg broke in hafl...:sqnteek:

just reach in from the front of the wheelwell area and get at the connectors, you don't have to take out the lamp

Theres no way I can do this. I tried getting my arm in there but theres now way to reach it. Maybe I will just have to buy a longer screw driver and try to take the whole thing out like what is suggested in the faq page. any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

ok, i understand everyone's frustrations if u don't have a long philip's head screwdriver...fortunately, i do, so i can't relate all that much to yer frustrations...i would suggest jack up each side of the car, find where the bulb is socketed into the road lampo housing, and replace the bulb that way...here's a pic that may give u some guidance:

notice the accordian-style wire cover...look for it and trace it to the back of the road lamp housing...there should b a dark red connector from the wires to the grey bulb housing...when u see the grey housing, which is fastened to the road lamp housing, turn the whole grey housing 1/8 of a turn (i think it's a clockwise turn)...carefully pull the housing and the bulb out...examine and take note that u need to pull the bulb straight out and insert the PIAA bulb by pushing it straight in...remember to not touch the bulb with yer fingers...wearing surgical gloves or using a paper towel should b fine...just don't use anything clumsy like a towel!!

u should have little to no problems doing it this way, otherwise get yerself a long neck screwdriver

There is a gap under the front bumper where the splash guard meets. It had enough room for me to wiggle my arm into it and get to the socket.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I really appreciate it. I think today or tomorrow I'm going to go try and buy a Long Phillips head screw driver and try to do it that way. I don't think I would be able to fit my arm through that gap. I saw that gap last night when I was trying to do it, but didn't try it. Thanks again, wish me luck.

To tell you the truth, when I replaced mine, I found it easier to follow the instructions in the owner's manual. Once you locate the 4 (or 6--can't remember off the top of my head) "screws", you simply pull down the plastic, twist the bulb assembly and the bulb and the wiring comes right down.

The easiest way without getting your knuckles bloody is to just take the ENTIRE piece out like Scooter posted.
All you need is a LONG Phillips screwdriver and a flashlight to see the screw head and you will have both out from the FRONT of the car in 2-minutes.

The 2003 is the same way for removing that FAKE intake thing.

This is what I did, I just figured that you only really need to take one out. I think it is the peg that he broke. You need to take a small flat head screw driver and be GENTLE!!! You have to hold the main part of the peg as you try and pry the middle part out. Sorry you are going through so much trouble. Only took me 5 minutes to do both sides.

do yourselves a favor and get the long neck screwdriver...here's y...first of all, better leverage (u take out the housing and are not in awkward body positions, so u can work calmly and efficiently)...second, better testing (u can test the light before putting it into the housing and risk scratching the coating if u need to take the bulb out of the housing only to reinstall it later)...third, better execution (u can SEE what u're doing...u'll find that since the PIAA's are bigger than stocks, they're more difficult to put in...and u DO NOT want to scratch the blue coating while installing, b/c the heat will melt around the scratch where the coating flakes off...u wanna take yer time and install CAREFULLY...what better way to do that than to b sitting properly and watching what yer doing.

just a suggestion

Well......I thank all of you for your suggestions....but I am going to go get a long neck philips and try it this route. It rained today so I didn't get a chance to try. Will keep you updated.......it will be pretty amazing if I actually get this completed!!! Thanks again

scooter there is nothing bad about not taking out the lights, you reach in twist, pull out (plenty of slack) - reinstall, why would you want to make more work for yourself?

its not wrong or right, its just easy

I agree that the easiest way is take the lamps out w/ a long philip screwdriver, 30 sec per sides (seriously), and U can take your sweet time putting the bigger Piaa bulb in...

Much easier ....

I love reading this stuff! I tried Shawn S' way and turned that screw for what seemed like a half hour and nothing ever came loose. Then I tried to just reach up in there and it couldn't have been easier. Oh... and yes, I did my own CAI! Didn't have to use any tools called "thingy's" either. (Sorry Amir).

You only need to turn the screw about 5 or 6 turns.
It has a capture device on it and will NEVER completely come out and get lost.

You only need to back it out about a 1/4 inch and the entire lens assembly can be pulled right out through the opening.
The screw will still be in place on the back of the lens housing ready to be turned tightly back in place.
VERY EASY !!!!!!!

Until you do it you won’t understand how easy it is.
No need to grope around under the car or shove your hand through confined spaces.

Shawn S

See the photo……the screw is still in place.

Well, I have tried it BOTH ways, and I agree totally with Scooter & Shawn S. Get a #1 phillips head (or a #0 if you can find it) with at least 6" blade. I can't believe Sears doen't carry one, but True Value does. I also ran into the continual turning to no avail. This was because I had #3 phillips head screwdriver which is too large to seat itself into the screwhead.
