Goodbye CLS - Hello Audi S4
Goodbye CLS - Hello Audi S4
After nearly 6 months of thought and test drives I have finally found a replacement for my 2001 CL type S. Last week I bought a 2004 certified used Audi S4. It's red, has a 340 hp V8 and a 6 speed manual, with only 9K miles.
The CLS has been a fine car for me for nearly 5 years and 85,000 miles. It's too bad I will have to sell it. The forum here has been of great benefit. It gave me guidance to make informed choices on some mods such as lowering springs, new wheels and tires, getting rid of the bowling ball trim, M5 rear spoiler and the DIY front grill.
I test drove everything sporty out on the market before making a decision on the S4. I have always bought new but I really like the advantages of the used certified program that Audi offers - eveything is covered for 6 years or 100,000 miles so I am set until 2010. Saving 14K$ over new has its advantages too!!
So far driving the S4 has been a blast. The power is a big step up over the CLS plus the quattro system puts all that power on the ground. Even though the Audi is heavier it handles and brakes much better. I love getting back to a manual transmission. The interior has the best materials available plus the Recaro seats are the best my a** has sat in. Next winter I will appreciate the all wheel drive.
S4's with manual tranmissions are hard to find in the Chicago area, plus I really wanted a red one, so I went looking nationwide. I found one at an Audi dealer in Kansas City, caught a plane, bought it and drove it back.
So its time to sell the CLS.

Did you drive either the '05 G35x Sport (280hp) or '05 G35 6spd (298hp)? Choosing between them or your pre-owned (ever so slightly used w/only 9K miles) Audi, I like your choice of the S4!

A new S4 runs about $52-53K depending on options plus about $2K for an extended warranty. The going rate for a year old one is $38K-40K.
