Lightbulb Feeler: Equal Length Headers

Mods if this is inappropriate please let me know how to go about doing this correctly.

There was hysteria about equal length headers in the past. Most ideas were either shot down or there was just not enough interest to have them made due to estimated cost.

The header options we have now are listed:

ebay – Very small in diameter, two flex pipes, poorly made, no bend in the pipe for 6 speeds/swapped cars.
XS Power – Comptech replica, had the bend for 6 speed, worked on almost all J native applications. Discontinued.
Comptech - Proven gains but expensive and rare. I believe one of the members from the CL boards picked up the last one from Heeltoe. Discontinued.
P2R’s equal length – Sean no longer makes these. They were awesome and are quality. I have seen them in person. Discontinued.
Paul’s (NVA-AV6) equal length – Very quality. Saw the build from scratch to finished product. Only person I know with a set is Morgan (civicdrvr). Paul has said to me personally that he will probably never make another set. Discontinued.

So what are our options?

The CL/TL/Accords are becoming affordable as they age and swaps are very common amongst the boards these days. You can see that the only option we have is either the ebay header or stock. You may find some of the options listed in the Classifieds if you are lucky.

I’m here to offer an opportunity to have a true equal length setup.

I spoke to a longtime friend of mine who is a fabricator. He is willing to put the time and effort to have these sets made. He has the ability to have these mass produced after the prototype is complete and gains are proven.

What I need is a volunteer. My friend is located in Tampa, FL.

Here is a list to get this thing started. Hoping some local members are willing to help out.

- The car. Must be a 98-02 Accord, 99-03 TL or TL-S, or 01-03 CL or CL-S. (Preferably a 6 speed CL-S)
- Measurements. Put the car on a lift and figure out what’s the best possible way to make this setup while still keeping it daily driven friendly. A more hardcore setup could be made if requested.
- Prototype. Once measurements are made and setup is finalized. The prototype process begins and the car will be needed again until the prototype is complete.
- R&D. Prototype is complete and the car will need to be dyno’d with the stock headers and with new headers after to see the gains.
- Production. The gains are proven and the prototype will be sent to get “digitized”, where bends can be precision made and replicated.
- Mass Production. You can order anytime without having to wait for a fabricator to make to order.

THESE WILL BE MADE! I’ll be paying for most of the fabrication and R&D. I will make sure that these will fit all models AT and MT. I would like to have non-S members participate as well to see the gains for those platforms.

Whoever the first volunteer is, I will be sure to get you a free set for helping me and the community.

Once everything comes to fruition, I will contact the admins and mods to become a vendor and hopefully start selling these to the many J-Series enthusiast. The cost will be affordable, I promise (putting my name and credit on the line here)!!! Opinions and ideas are welcome.

Here are a few pictures of my friend’s fabrication. He is currently working on 370z single turbo setup. Last month he fabricated the fastest single turbo setup for a G37S. He has also built cars that took the 2010 and 2011 SCCA T2 Championships.

Before all the doomers come in a try to shoot this down before it's even started, I'm interested and hope we can get a test car out to make this happen.

It's alright. Maybe after the headers are out I can have you be a test guy for the TL-Ps.

I'll keep that in mind. I want this to be an option for everyone.

I like to see the market expand even if it's something as little as this. I got the Mugen rep spoiler jump started with Marcus and that came to be a success.

So hopefully I can stay consistent.

I also forgot to mention DC Sports as an option on the header options list. They are available but are for AT's only.

Would you make them all to fit the 6spd as well instead of having one for the 6spd and one for the automatic. I am curious because I might swap in a 6spd later

That was the plan was to have them all 6 speed with the bend in the pipe for clearance.

It would be ideal just in case someone decides to sell their set on the BM in the future, both 6MT and Auto guys could benefit.

Hopefully this comes to fruition. I have yet to dyno the car with the new headers/exhaust, but there is a distinct gain according to my butt-dyno. Definitely worth it.

Not 1 grand + one off prices for damn sure. Let me try to get the ball rolling with the test car and prototype first.

Good luck , Id buy a set if this ever comes to fruition. Will he need to remove the engine on the test car to fabricate them?

You could make and sell intakes also. The aftermarket options are too restrictive.

^ When Paul made mine, he used one of his extra engines mounted on a subframe to build it. Im not sure if Jakes fabricators has that convenience.

Agreed on the intakes. Theyre great for noise and basic bolt ons, but the J loves to breathe.

The big question - what material will these be made out of?

He actually has a J series engine at the shop in Tampa. He's planning to throw that into the RX7 down the road.

He can do the custom Intakes too but I'm focusing on this at the moment.

RichardParker's Intake setup is monstrous. Maybe he can get his guy to make a set and make it for guys like us who seek more power.

Material we are using will be 304 SS.

Funny.. have been trying to convince my buddy who owns a fab shop to make me a set of long tubes for the longest time now! Theyre definitely the recipe for cracking the magic 300 barrier. With that being said.. of course im in, id even be willing to toss some cash his/your way during the r&d phase

And this is what will happen. I actually want to make this a v-band setup unless the customers want otherwise.

It is not proven power. I'm not sure if I can advertise on here, PM me if you want some more info.

I've already PM'd Type R about the headers. Just waiting to hear a response from both my friend and him.

Bought my 03 CLS6 with XS header already on...if these are a green light for production then I'd be willing to switch(especially if gains/quality is a lot better)

The gains are definitely there. I went from XS headers (the old ones with the 2.5" collector) to the equal length long tubes. Theres a substantial gain to be had.

Because this will fit the CL/TL, it should also fit some year accords, right?

Selling it to Accord owners would vastly increase demand, I imagine.

^It should.

Jake - Depending on the size of the primaries, it may take a bit of work to install these. For the rear, you have to remove the intermediate shaft. In the front, you have to remove the radiator

I hope so. My buddy is actually keeping an eye on this thread. I told him to register when he gets the chance, so we will see what happens.

That was the idea. Hopefully this will be an option for j-swapped vehicles as well.

We will see what has to be done but it will be done. I am so over having weak options for cars that have great potential.

I am still waiting to hear back. I've already handed out one contact. Any more FL guys willing to volunteer?

Pm'd a couple members. My friend hasn't heard from anyone yet. I'll have to call again.

Not everyone likes the idea of having their car as the test vehicle for the build.

If I don't find anyone then this will have to wait until July when I can drive my car down there and use my own vehicle.

According to mapquest, you're only about a half hr from his friend in Tampa. Would you be willing to let him use your car for mock up??

Sounds good JCharged. I'll buy a set.

Was wanting Paul to make me a set of his headers down the road. But like you stated, he probably won't make another set and doesn't have time to do that kind of fabrication on the side.
