Engine Swap??????

Okay now before i post my question, i want all the smart a**es, flamers, and non-CL owners to only post if it will answer my question. This is a car board and the question is addressed as a car question:

In our CL-S, what do you guys think about doing a engine swap? It seems you might be paying the same price, or alittle more but you would get a substanital gain in hp and torque then say the 3.5 upgrade for 30-50 hp for 5000 dollars not to mention tranny rebuild and L-10 install. Plus you would be at a point where other mods would work such as NO2, turbos, intercoolers whatever. I mean a LS1 or AMG v-12 in our car would be a very nice feature to have .

tell me what you guys think

Later,
Dantes

Aren't those RWD cars? Not exactly a drop in replacement.

Hmm you might be right, is that a problem, sorry i am not a mechanic or a student of car physics. So you can't have a RWD engine in a FWD car? Please no flames, this is one fleid i do not know that well

I'm thinking you'd either have to convert the CL to RWD or rotate the engine 90 degrees. Either way, you'd probably have problems fitting everything in the engine bay properly. And if you went RWD, I'm guessing you'd have to completely rework the whole suspension. And then find room for a drive shaft and exhaust in the hump.

FWD cars usually have their engines mounted transversely while RWD cars usually have their engines mounted longitudinally. Also, 63% of the weight in the CL-S is in the front. If you could fit a V8 or V12 in a CL, the weight distribution would be so terrible that the car wouldn't even be drivable. And forget about traction. An engine swap might be possible but it is not practical by any means.

You'd still have the problem of converting it to FWD, but at least the displacement and presumably the physical size are simiar. But why? Is only 290HP. We get better than that with headers.

That sounds like a truly inspired idea. The CL-S and NSX share many of the same components I believe, maybe you'd need to only do a partial engine swap.

Has anyone thought about a port and polish job on our engine?

I think you should save that money and use it to trade in your current CL-S once a six-speed CL-S is available.

Strange you mention the port and polish -- someone should do it for a few ponies...

The NSX engine would be a real pain to fit in the engine bay -- it is a 90-degree V-6. The CLS has a 60-degree V-6, and this takes a lot less room than the DOHC 3.2 NSX engine.

Very interesting idea Dante. It would be a cL-x. Man that sounds nice. I've already thought about that once. Not really sure if it would work. Wait! Anything can be done! Just gotta have the money to do it. I'd find a cL-s that was gutted and start from there. First off, was this the swap you where thinking of? And as for vxcL's comment, why are you judging his idea? Man you've gotta admitt a(n) cL-x would be tight. plus they have all kinds of upgrades. Depends on the person too. Why have what everyone else has. Interesting concept though. I'll look into it a little further.
