E-Brake handle on the 6-Speed

I’m wondering if anyone else is having this problem.

I think the cable is stretching or something keeps coming loose because over time my handle keeps getting higher and higher.
When I took delivery, a “full pull” of the handle ended up at about 30-degrees.
After a few weeks the handle was pulling all the way back to 50-60 degrees before it got tight

At my 3,750 Oil Change I had them adjust this and it was nice and tight for a while.
The handle was only coming up like 20-25 degrees when tight.
Now I’m at 7,500 and the sucker is up to about 50 again.

It’s going in tomorrow for my 7,500-Mile Oil Change so I’m going to have them tighten it up again, but I don’t want this to be a reoccurring problem.

Anyone else noticing this or do I just have an overdeveloped RIGHT ARM ??? :wackit: :wackit: :wackit:

Shawn,

I think you have an overdeveloped right arm!

Sorry, couldn't pass that one by.

Ive noticed the same problem with mine...they've adjusted mine twice already and I think its time for a third go round....although i do have quite a bit more miles on mine than yours, it still shouldnt matter...and all they are gonna do is re-tighten the damn thing...oh well...thank god the dealer is only 10 minutes away from my house

It's pretty common for most cars. It will always need to be adjusted if you want it to stay tight.

Mine is about 66 degrees off the console when parked. It's been that way since I took delivery. I was thinking about having it adjusted when I take it in for 7500 mile service this month.

I don't think it would matter, but do any of you park on hills? Do you park the car in gear? I could see how one would have to pull on the parking brake harder if on a hill.

There's about an inch or two of play in the e-brake before it actually starts to feel like there's tension. Haven't had it adjusted yet, but I probably will at 7,500. I don't recall how much play it had on delivery, but it seems to go back the same distance as it always had.

Every MT I've owned has needed the e-brake adjusted now and again. It shouldn't go loose too often, but some amount of increasing slack seems to be the norm. Though as long as it holds the wheels, you should be OK.

This a common thing with ebrakes mounted on the console. Some cable must stretch. If you want it to stay nice and tight you will be adjusting very often.

My garage is FLAT and where I park at work is FLAT too.
The car is always put into 1st or 3rd gear when parked.

I occasionally park on a hill, but never really pull HARD on the handle.

mine was too tight when i first bought the car, i had it adjusted to be lighter... why do you need it so tight? mine was so tight, i parked on a hill and i thought i put the ebrake on... and my car started to roll! =/ so i had it adjusted and now it's fine, heh, i've never cared to look at how many degrees it's sitting at =P

mine doesn't seem to catch unless it's pulled all the way up. if i pull it halfway, the car will still roll....

I took mine back at 1500 miles to get it tightened. It still seems fine now (it's got about 4k miles on it).

Grab it

Grab that helms manual man... i am looking at it now... It looks fairly simple to adjust... i have been meaning to adjust mine, because i had the same thing happen to me... I think it is because your brakes in the rear wear and it needs to make up for the difference.. i would imagine that is why you have to keep adjusting it.. But what do i know.. i am no mechanic...

All I can say, Don't jack the e-brake so hard... I usually leave the car in neutral and start to apply the e-brake until I stop rolling.. Then shut her down and put her in first... But some of these hills in Pittsburgh are steep. So I need to apply it tight.

Yea, if it’s ever a problem in-between services I’ll probably do it myself, but I had one scheduled for today so I have them do it for free.

Why do you guys even use your e-brakes (especially with a manual transmission)?

Because a car can unexpectedly “pop” out of gear. Especially if you’re on an incline or the car gets bumped in the ASS by someone.
That could turn a 200-dollar repair into a major headache.

Plus, a prankster could rock the car back and forth to pop it out of gear.

Also you need to push the clutch in when starting the car.
If the E-Brake isn’t on and you don’t have the other foot on the brake, the car will start rolling.

My ebrake does not seem to suffer from this loosening effect. And I do use it. Just after the 7500 service, it developed about an 1"-1.5" play in the released position and the dealer fixed it without issue. It's been fine since then and I'm close to the 11250 service.

I checked this AM and it's 7 clicks to engaged. I believe the Helms manual list 6 - 10 click as the acceptable range.

I think it is more properly called a Parking Brake and is necessary to keep the car from rolling when parked.

I don't believe a manual transmission has a gear lock like on the Automatic when shifted into 'Park'. Engaging the parking brake takes strain off the gear that you leave the car in (1st or Reverse) or allows you to park in neutral and keep all strain off the transmission when parked.

I would not park a manual transmission car without engaging the parking brake.

Hmmm... I've driven probably 150,000 miles in manual transmissions, and never used the e-brake once. Guess I haven't encountered any "pranksters" yet.

I can't quite recall but I know you need to put the parking brake on to set the seat memory or the remote keyless entry too. I read that somewhere... So add that to the list of things you need the parking brake for...
