Dreaded speed governor

I have a '03 CL-S 6mt. I feel like I hit a wall at about 148mph. Before all the nannies start telling me how to drive, stuff it. I have called a couple of shops and Hondata and no one had an answer for me. If I had a four banger they can upgrade everything but told me there aren't many options for a J32. I have heard people say there is no limiter which I know is flase. I hit the governor in both 5th and 6th gear and have plenty of petal to go. Car is really stable at 140 and I want to see what it is capable of. Any answers out there?

You hit the governor... are you looking for a work-around? I don't know of anyone who has gotten around it. Maybe you need a different car if you're looking for a 200mph top speed. I'm not being sarcastic, I'm being honest.

There's no known work around, its embedded in the ECU.

Get an AEM EMS and find out what the top speed is, but please let everyone else know when you plan on doing it so you only kill yourself.

I've hit the limiter in my RSX, just to see what it was...did it twice.
There is no good or justifiable reason to be going that fast...I admit it, and I don't do it anymore...even my little random spurts of hauling ass now are usually few and far between and limited to 110 or 120. You have to push for a while to get up to the high 140's I would imagine.

If you want to go faster you should buy a car designed to go faster then 150mph. I can't talk shit about speed cause I've hit the limiter about 3 times in the CLS; however, I had no desire to go any faster in the cls.

If there was no limiter I would guess the CLS6 would be able to pull off a mid to high 160 speed. I really doubt it would get to the 170's. I know the gearing will allow for more, but I think HP vs drag will be the limiting factor. Just my guess.

I have only gone above 115 mph twice in my life(both in cl) and the second time i did it I got reckless driving in another state, cost me thousands, had to drive to other state to go to court, deal with local lawyer etc etc. I learned my lesson fast and havn't been over 100 since then.

There is no way that a car making only 260HP at the crank is going to move 3446lbs fast enough to hit 160mph.

Also keep in mind that the faster you go the less accurate the speedo is. Chances are he was only going about 120mph when his speedo said 148mph.

Not calculating in weight, wind resistance, and many other factors, in theory the CL-S 6 speed could hit the following in each gear:

1st 40mph
2nd 64mph
3rd 93mph
4th 127mph
5th 162mph
6th 206mph
Reverse 39mph

Thats to say that if you had the CL-S on a lift with no rolling resistance and removed the other factors, it could spin it's tires freely at those speeds.

He didn't do 148mph unless he has a LOT of mods and a good tail wind.

Automatic loss of license for a year in MN and many other states if you get caught going over 100mph.

Thats the point. If you get caught.

Im pretty sure this car is able to run 160mph for sure but that would take a while. :P

Reckless driving in VA if you go over 80. Most cops will let you go. Over 100, going to jail. Losing license. Car impounded. Fun times!

^ over 80 is reckless driving?

Over here in ON it's 50km/h over gets you a 7-day license suspension, car is impounded immediately, and a fine in the thousands.

OP we don't particularly care if you kill yourself trying to go 148mph on (presumable) public roads. We care about the other people you'll take out with you, and our collective insurance payment which is already high enough thanks to people like you. Cool? Cool.

Exactly. Act like an idiot all you want. Natural selection will do its thing but don't fuck off and do stuff that will negatively impact others.

I know I have seen 147 or so with GPS. Speedo said 150 151 or so iirc. I remember the first time my speedo showed 150 I posted about it going that fast and soemone reminded me about the speedo error. So i went back out and did it again with the gps and got to 147. It was still pulling, but slowly. And that was at 5000ft. So I'm sure im my CLS auto will do 147 and then a little more (without the limiter) then i'm sure a cls6 @ sea level could pull of a 160 run. These just my thoughts.

20 over or above 80mph. Which is BS because in some areas the speed limit is 70 so 20 over would be 90, instead they give you 10mph to work with (then again, Im complaining about speeding which is illegal anyway).

With that said, I occasionally get my car to 120 but then when I notice, I let off. Ive done ~140 when I was 16, but that wasnt in the CL. Theres no reason to do those speeds on public roads. It took me 8 tickets, 4 suspensions, and ridiculous insurance premiums to figure that out.

What planet is the guy from that said I was probably only running 120mph. I now some people on these sites really don't know much about cars other than turning the key. I just got through doing my timing belt and adjusting all my valves yeasterday evening. I locked my cruise in the other day at 120 and wanted to see if the gps in my iPhone was accurate. It was within a mile of the speedo. I have a garmin gps and it is the same. Some of us know what speed is. My Dad owned and auto repair for 17 years and a boat dealership for hte past 24. I am certified outboard tech and have been since I was eighteen. I have set up boats that run over 100 mph and have a tunnel hull that runs over 108 with nearly a 400hp outboard hanging off the back. I like speed and I respect it also. To the guy that said he has only been to 115 twice in hs car, buy a prius. I live in Alabama with a lot of open roads. My first ticket was 85 in a 55 in my Dad's F150 with 351M with a holley and glass packs. The trooper wrote me a ticket and told me to slow it down. The fastest ticket was for 105 that they mailed to the house and I got thrown out in court as they couldn't prove it was me. I feel that my car is capable of more and wanted to see if anyone knew a way to get around the limiter.

The 99 Tl ECu had no speed limiter on swapped car. The timing advanced is fucked but if u feel the need for speed you would have to re pin the engine and dash harness or get the 1999 Tl harnesses with the ECu. Then you have to get riches module and tune the air fuel using an fic or emanage.

Good luck on it bt are a couple mph really worth it? I did 158 in my car and I never want to do it again. How would you know what stable should feel like at those speeds? You're covering 4 football fields in seconds...

I have never been the preachy type but I don't want to hear about you dying. We have lost a few members since I been here and I really hate to hear it.

Focus on acceleration and no so much top speed.

Good luck on whatever u decide.

Phee, thanks for the intelligent answer. That is all I wanted to know and you answer it for me. That is more work than I want to do to my car. I didn't know if there was a way to feflash the ecu or if someone offered a chip or a way to bypass the limiter. What I'd like to know is what ecu is doing to limit my speed. If there is a way to disconnect a speed sensor to bypass it. Is the ecu cutting fuel or retarding the timing or both. The way it kills to suddenly I feel like it is cutting fuel or changing injector duration.
