Differences in motor oil.

I am now left wondering if there really is a superiority of synthetic oil over typical.
One of my friends works at some tuneup shop here and told me there isn't any advantages except that it just lasts a little longer. He pretty much said it is just hype that makes everyone think that synthetic gives your car more balls.

What do you guys know or think?

Saw a SpikeTV show about Motorcycles and they did a test on Dino vs. Synthetic on a performance bike. The straped the bike to a dyno and measured the temperature of the engine. Synthetic showed to run the engine a few degrees cooler and increase the whp of the bike by about 2%.

There was another test about synthetic fluids on SpikeTV's Powerblock. Took a muscle car and dyno'd with with stock fluid vs. synthetic. This included changing the Diff fluid to Royal Purple Synthetic. They also showed a 2-3% increase in whp when switching to synthetic.

The difference is minimal but there are some advantages to synthetic. My favorite is the longer OCI.

synthetic lasts longer which means you don't have to change the oil as often as dino oil, but the costs of synthetic will offset that anyway, so essentially you will probably be paying the same amount for motor oil. But for average driving, synthetic is not really needed.

With the advances in frictionless oil in the SL API standard, synthetic oil is superior to dino oil in a lot of ways. It allows an engine's components to run smoother and prevent unnecessary heat build up. It has been documented time and time again, that synthetic oil is superior to any dino oil. A true synthetic (Amsoil & Royal Purple) vs. highly refined petroleum (Mobil 1) vs. dino is a long debate.

Like any other oil thread.... oil threads are worthless.

Is Mobil 1 with SuperSyn Technology a fully synthetic motor oil?

Yes, it is. To meet the demanding requirements of today's specifications (and our customers' expectations), Mobil 1 with SuperSyn uses high-performance fluids, including polyalphaolefins (PAOs), along with a proprietary system of additives. Each Mobil 1 with SuperSyn viscosity grade uses a unique combination of synthetic fluids and selected additives in order to tailor the viscosity grade to its specific application.

Mobile 1 says there oil is a fully synthetic oil, why do you say its not?

Mobil1 is a highly refined petroleum oil, it is not a true synthetic. True synthetics are not refined, they are created. There is a long discussion about this that I have to dig up, it includes data, testing, etc. The only true synthetic around is Amsoil. Don't get me wrong, I've used Mobil1 for years... no problems and excellent oil analysis results, plus it is easier to get.

Thanks for the info. I just started using mobile 1 and I will stick with it due to the price and availablity.

I made the switch from dino juice to mobil one in my cls 6m a couple thousand miles ago. I don't know about improved hp or lower operating temps, but my fuel mileage has definitely improved 15% (20mpg to 23 mpg) in commuter traffic. the first time I noticed the difference, I thought it was a mistake (like I'd topped off the tank and forgot to reset the trip meter), but every tank since then has averaged 23 mpg.
