Dead Type-S Transmission
Dead Type-S Transmission
First, there were scratched rims...
Then, there was the jacked S badge...
Now, there's a transmission that shifts super rough and locks up in 2nd gear until I turn the car off!
I'd been told that certain runs of our cars were manufactured with bad trannys, and it looks like I got unlucky.
The story:
I did a road trip from San Diego to the Bay Area for the BBBQ. Made it to Richmond with no problems to drop my dad off at his friend's house, then proceeded to Foster City to crash at Tech's place. Tranny started acting as I was driving, felt like it was slipping. Locked up in 2nd gear (no way to shift out of it, either in SS or normal) on the San Mateo bridge, so I limped the rest of the way. Check engine light came on.
When I arrived and turned the car off, Tech drove it a little, and it shifted fine. We left it alone for the night and went to the drag races in Tech's car (and flashed a police helicopter with a very bright spotlight
) and detailed our cars the next day. My car drove fine for most of the day (we drove it around a little), but by the late afternoon, it was shifting rough again.
That night, we left it at Hopkins Acura in Foster City, and I'm stuck with a POS Chevy Malibu rental for the week (it's actually not too bad a car, but definite POS compared to the Type-S
), and I'll be making another road trip next wknd to pick up my (hopefully fixed for free under warranty) Type-S.
Does anybody know the number for Acura's customer service, and whether they might reimburse me for the rental POS (about $300 for the week).
I'll write updates as stuff happens.....

My CLS also had a rough 1-2 gear shifting. I dropped for 15,000 miles serivces last Wednesday, Since then I have been driving a base Chevy Cavalier (worst POS in the Chevys!) I have been told that the ECU/PCM would have to be replaced...
I will keep you posted too...

I wasn't the one who flashed the helicopter (I think his user name is Oreo) but Tech and I were on the scene. Sure enough, the chopper started flashing us with his spotlight (we were at a gas station with about 8 CL/TL and 15 people) and a cop rolled to where the spotlight was. We all took off and nobody was cited/arrested. The chopper did follow us for awhile though until we got onto 880 and bailed. Pretty fun night actually

Anyway, it looks like the transmission problem will be sorted out with relatively minimal inconvenience for me (except for the unanticipated extra 550 mi road trip, but that's OK). The Acura dealer is taking _very_ good care of me. Diagnostics told him to replace a couple solenoids(sp?) that were telling the tranny to shift at the wrong time, but he's dealt with this problem before, and the fix only lasted 5 or 6K mi before it acted up again, and he had to replace the whole tranny. This time, he's going to ignore what diagnostics told him and just replace the tranny with a brand new one that (hopefully) doesn't have that problem. It's all under warranty and I'll be able to pick up the car next wknd. It also looks like I'll get at least partially reimbursed for the rental (maybe about $125 or so) by Acura Customer Relations, so we're good.
I'll probably roll in fri night/sat late morning/early afternoon and stick around until Sunday and do another bay area wknd...

I dont know if this means anything, but the same thing happened to my friends 97 Prelude... his car has the trip-tronic shifter like ours, but its only a 4 cylinder. Im not sure if we have the same transmission, but they seem very similar.
The bad news is that it cost him around $2,000 to replace it.
The dealer was astonished, he said it was 1 in 10,000 or something. That should never happen to an Accura/Honda with under 100,000 miles. =/

I HAD THAT SHIT HAPPEN TO ME ONCE I WORK IN A ACURA DEALERSHIP AND TOOK A CL-S FOR A DEMO WE USUALLY BEAT ON THE DEMOS A LITTLE. I TOOK THE VSA OFF LOCK THE E-BRAKE AND DID A NEUTRAL DROP AFTER GOING THROUGH FIRST WENT INTO SS THEN COULD NOT GET OUT OF SECOND EVEN IN AUTO. I HONESTLY DONT REMEMBER HOW I GOT IT BACK TO NORMAL I THINK I MIGHT HAVE SHUT THE CAR OFF. SINCE THEN ITS BEEN RUNNING FINE AND THEN I BOUGHT MY OWN CL-S. I HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING FROM ANY OF MY CUSTOMERS BUT I'LL KEEP MY EARS OPEN.

I'm never going to jail. They'd call my mom but thats about it seeing as though i'm under 18. and why do you think i was the first one out of that parking lot when that cop on wheels came around? what could they site me for? honestly i didn't do anything 'against the law' but i will admit that shining the spotlight on the pigs wasn't the smartest thing i could have done.

You can get arrested as long as your 16. So unless you're 15 and driving (which I believe can't happend in any state..but I may be wrong) then they'd call mommy and throw your ass in jail. But your record clears at 18..that's from experience in NYC at least.
