Crank HP with headers

Ok ive been thinking about this. now we are seeing new cars in our class or similar classes come out with higher or very close HP numbers..

G35Coupe - 280
350Z-287
2004 GTP - 250
Altima - 250
Maxima - 255

ok, so these are all crank HP numbers, and our crank HP number is 260@6100....SO lets do some math here, if a CL-S typically dyno's at 200 HP that is roughly a 23.1% loss. now that PEAK HP on a dyno is usually around 6500 rpm (look at Astroboy's stock dyno for example, 204 HP at 6500 rpm) now according to Comptechs header DYNO the peak HP (32) is at 6600 RPM...so now we have verified that the peak HP in both "stock" and "headerized" forms is right about the same RPM...now im not one to doubt, but i think 32 WHP from the headers is a BIT optimistic, so for the sake of argument and of simplicity here, lets say the headers give 30 WHP...now if 30 WHP is ony 76.9% of what they actually give at the Crankshaft, then THEORETICALLY, the headers give us 39.01 HP at the crank...now add that to our 260 peak Crank HP number and that gives us just a tit hair shy of 300.

in conlusion, a STOCK CL-S with only the HEADERS should be putting down 300 HP at the crank.

so am i totally off in my thinking or is it true that our car with the headers alone as a single mod (no CAI, no exhaust, etc) should put us back at the top of the perch for current peak power numbers in our class???? if thats the case, then i could care less about the 280 hp G35C or other similar cars, because the headers are such a simple (and now affordable mod) please guys, if im wrong correct me, id love to hear any feedback to this

That 30 WHP is still optimistic. In reality most will get in the 20 - 25 range maybe giving 30 crank HP. But 290 crank HP is still very respectable from a NA 3.2L engine.

I think torque values are the biggest differences between all those cars, versus ours. We have a low torque value

I AGREE WITH YOU.. IF YOU PUT HEADERS ON THOSE OTHER CARS.. IT WILL NOT GIVE THE SAME GAINS AS THE HEADERS GIVE FOR OUR CARS..ACURA PROBABLY MADE OUR STOCK HEADERS SO SHITTY TO KEEP THE PRICE DOWN...

HOWEVER JUST BECAUSE WE HAVE A HIGHER MAX HP.. WE STILL ARE NOT THE FASTEST.. =( ITS ALL ABOUT THE OVERALL PACKAGE.. WEIGHT/
WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION/TRANSMISSION/TORQUE/TRACTION
ACURA DIDNT DO THEIR CALCULATIONS THE BEST THEY COULD FOR THE CLS.. THINK ABOUT IT EVEN WITH HEADERS WE ARE STILL WAY SLOWER THAN A STOCK NSX WHICH IS RATED AT ONLY 290-5 CRANK HP.....

I think the +30 HP from the headers was at the crank, not the wheels. Do I remember correctly?

nope, according to comptechs dyno (available on their site) they actually get 32 Peak HP at the wheels...but like another guy said, that is probably a bit optimistic....more realisitcally its in the high 20's

The torque is the big difference but headers add around 15 torque I think, so that helps a bit.

And as for headers 30+ is optimistic. I conservatively expect 20-25hp gain with the knockoff OBX headers and if you get 20-something I would be content with the purchase.
