Question Comptech Transmission Cooler

Is there an advantage to the Comptech transmission cooler over any other cooler on the market? $149 seems like crazy pricing. You can get a B&M in the same size for around $40-$60!

Well, i noticed you have a 6spd, I've inquired in the past if it would be beneficial for 6spd owners and most said it wouldn't because the necessary heat to allow us to change gears should remaint he way it is.

for colder climates, it would make it worse and harder to shift smoother if I recall.

For hotter climates I still think it could help. But for those times when it's cold it can make things worse.

Do a search and you may turn up some results about it.

I'm not considering it for myself. I just wondered why they charge 3x more then other transmission coolers on the market (and there's a good chance they just re-brand B&M as they're a big player in that market). Heck for that price you could get a much larger one the entire length of the radiator and cool it even more.

well, sometimes charging more in some cases makes it more appealing. It's the "I own the Comptech Version" opposed to the generic but equally effective B&M version. It's all marketing when it boils down to it in some cases.

FYI, too much cooling for a transmission can be a bad thing can't it?

Uh, the headers were the only thing that were abnormaly expensive really (aside from the tranny cooler) IMO.

their springs, strut bars, sway bars, intakes were all very competively priced IMHO.

They are going out of business probably due to decreased sales. people aren't modding their cars like they used to. at one point you could drive down the road here in LA and every other car was modded in some way, not these days.

Yes you can cool the transmission too much (even though the #1 killer of all transmissions is heat). The torque converter will not lockup until the fluid is up to temp so if it's too cold, it won't lock up and your gas mileage will suffer.

I know I'm bumping an old thread but the Comptech and B&M transmission coolers are nearly (if not completely) identical. When I had an automatic I purchased the B&M cooler.

It is the same. Comptech used the B&M 70255 tranny cooler in their kit and provided mounting brackets so it hung independently in front of the AC condenser. My preference was to use the 70264 which was larger and better built in my opinion. Brackets are easy enough to fabricate to accomplish the same placement. Download the cooler install instructions from Comptech's site and you'll see what I mean.

Screw brackets.... I used plastic "zip" cable ties.

Just passing along that no fabrication is required. I just connected the cooler to the radiator using zip ties. In fact Comptech uses the same method on their heat exchanger used in the S2000 aftercooler kit.

Did you ever get your hands on a S2000 aftercooler kit?

After talking with Scalbert he convinced me not to pursue it. The core in that kit is too small even for the S2000 kit (according to Steve).

I'm sure it would help but the fabrication and cost involved wouldn't be worth it. Similar gains/advantages could be had by simply installing a alcohol/water injection kit.

If I decide to get my hands on a blower again I'll put something together for less than $1,000 plus the cost of e-manage.

I think I paid $2,500 for Steve's kit.

Here's a better idea on how large (15" long) the barrel style IC is that I would want to use:

Rated for 500HP and 920

Will do.

Don't expect anything until end of summer at the earliest though. And plan to relocate your battery.

Supercharger is located on the hot-side of the motor. On the left.
