I went against a 540 on the highway (no clue if he was auto or manual) at about 120kmhr -- accelerate to about 190km/hr (at which point the car dies) and the bimmer left me in the dust.

540 is a 4-liter 8 Cylinders. The comparo is not fair to start with.

Tell you what it is easy...

For acceleration, Just find 2 numbers:

1) Effective max HP @ wheels
2) Total weight (curb weight + payload) of the car.

==========================
Divide number in 1) with the number from 2)

The car that has a higher ratio will win any drag race up 100MPH.

That is all.

For example,

1) CLS has 200 HP @ wheels and weigh some (3550 + 200 for an average payload) It has a power/weight ratio: 0.0533
or 5.3HP/100 lb

2) 540i has 260 HP @ wheels and weigh some (3800 + 200 for an average payload) It has a power/weight ratio: 0.065
or 6.5HP/100 lb

Therefore, the BMW 540 will win! Easy, right ?

You're so academic, Nighthawk

but yeah, it seems to have worked out that way irl

That V8 is a beast on the highway -- I think the only saving factor is that most of them come chip-limited for top-speed. Course, that is easily chipped-out too

People in MA are crazy!

Last night, around 10:30 PM, I was driving on I-495, a 65 MPH HW. The nuts is you see a lady, 40-50 yrs old driving here camry at 90-95 clip worse... I saw a fully loaded coralla, yes it was carrying 4 people, and the fuking driver was pusing some 95-100 MPH!

I can leave them both in the dust but why should I? I will be happier to let them pass and I wull just follow 1/4 miles away. Got ticketed, ..... yeah they would save me the hassle!

Sometimes the "stay-behind" technique works out really well. Let some one driving really fast work as the "jammer" -- they run up in front weaving through traffic at 10-20+ over the flow.

Then, just cruise, behind them, kind of like using them as "blockers."

I saw the new Camry with 5 people crammed in it bouncing off the ground (with sparks flying) at 100 MPH!!!

(The angels where driving with them that day.)

I've got a '89 5.0 Mustang 5-speed that has a stock engine (same as a '92) and a stock CL-S. My G-Tech shows the CL-S is a couple tenths quicker in the 1/4. The problem is that with so many aftermarket parts available for the 5.0, it could easily be bumped up a notch to surpass the CL. But if both are stock, the CL-S should win. Headers on the CL will give you an even greater win margin. I raced a 540 once in the 5.0 and didn't stand a chance. 540's (esp. 6-speeds) are fast cars.

I agree with EricL on the "stay-behind" technique. Let them be the jackrabbit for the cop to zoom in on while you relax a little distance behind them.

Actually I think it's a 4.4-liter. Anyone know why it's not the 544i instead?

Thanks for being corrected.

Any reason why the CL-S loses 23% HP at the wheels while the BMW only loses 7%? I wouldn't think our ATs are that inefficient. Applying the 7% power loss to the CL puts the power/weight ratio at .0645, very close to the BMW. Don't get me wrong ... my 97 540iA was/is faster than my CL. I was just curious about your data.

That 7% figure must be from a 6-speed 540. Yeah, I find it hard to believe that the CL-s that much also but apparently that is the case.

"Lic: THX CBOE" -That's great! You're an options player I take it? I loved selling naked puts when the market was going up. Different story now though.

Right you are ... there was a time (seems so long ago) where those Naked Puts were like finding sacks of money. My brother and I used to joke about how large a truck we would back up to the trading window. Then April 2000 came ... whoa Nellie. Takin' it really easy now. The market has no direction and I can't day trade it (got a day job to worry about).

And I just responded. We can compare notes on our diagonalized, delta neutral, iron butterfly, back ratio, bull call spreads . Of course, there's nothing like getting a Naked Put deal done ....

lead sled dog,

Are you supposed to be some hot shot trader spitting out those textbook terms? A real options trader never sells naked options. They buy volatility, not sell it. If the market is moving up it would be smartest to just buy calls. Simple is simple. Structures are better for embedding with underlying. Have you ever heard of delivery risk?
