The CL is one tough car...

It's an ugly way to find out, but we must have one of the most ruggedly built, safest cars on the road.

Found out the hard way today, when my wife was in an accident with our '01 CL Type S (my old one, which I passed on to her to get an '03 6 speed for myself). A kid in a hurry ran a red light (in a '99 Integra) and T-boned her at about 40 mph, right into her driver's side door - and she walked away with only a couple of bruises.

The car looks totalled, driver's side is pushed in about a foot, all the air bags went off, the hinges on the door actually ripped away from the unibody, roof buckled, the inner door panel actually crushed onto the seat - the whole car is now shaped like a banana. But, it was actually drivable after the accident, and she walked away (getting out the passenger door). The insurance company is making some noises about wanting to fix the car, but there's no way I'll stand for that - it's getting totalled if I have to sick a pack of lawyers on them).

It's nice to know that if something horrible like this happens, the car stands up to it well and protects the occupants. I guess that 5-star crash-test rating really does mean something. After seeing how well she came through this, I think we'll look for another CL, and try to find one with as low mileage as possible.

Dang. Sorry to hear about that, but glad she's OK.

A TLer got rear-ended by an Astro van a few days ago and he came out fine, too. Our cars are tough as hell. I'd rather not find out myself, though. *knock on wood* :o

Safety sold me on the CL. I was in a CL when a Buick traveling 35 mph plowed into the passenger side door when I was shotgun (riding in the passenger seat). My arm was only bruised, REALLY purple and black where the airbag made contact, but not broken.

The car was totalled, even though it was only 6 months old with 5,000 miles. Reason: frame was badly bent and pinched.

When I needed a car in fall of '02, I got a CL.

Glad to hear your wife was alright-

Glad to hear your wife is okay... In accidents as such, its good to see cars built to protect their occupants. Hopefully everyone will work out for ya, and best of luck with the new CL....

The way my TL held up is my big accident was a factor in purchasing another Acura. Solid built cars.

Glad your wife is ok.

Ask tmk70 how tough these tanks are. He was smacked by a drunk last summer, and he came out better than he might have in another car. Hell, my ex-wife destroyed her Integra, and she came out relatively injury-free. Acura may struggle with the transmission, but it doesn't struggle with the solidity of the frame and safety cage.

I'm glad that you are ok. I still remember an incident posted a long time ago by a girl member. She and her bf were on a road trip to gamble. They had a bad accident. The CL was totalled but they went gambling with very minor injuries.
Besides, the tranny, the CL is everything that I'm asking for. The TL will be my next car.

Glad to hear the wife is OK. This is always my biggest fear. Before my CL I had a T-Bird and got t-boned on the pass side by a 200sx doing about 40. He just about came through the door. It picked the car up and spun it around leaving the radiator attached to my car. The door crushed half the seat. I cant imagine anyone surviving in that seat. I was surprised that such a big car had so much damage. Nice to hear that the CL may actually hold up better. My wife and son ride in a Sequoia partly for this reason.

I’m glad to hear she made it out OK.

This type of accident brings up another reason why I hate big SUV’s.
Imagine if the “vehicle” that ran the light was a 5,000 pound Expedition, Navigator or H2.
I don’t think the results would have been nearly as good for your wife had that happened.

Glad your wife was not badly hurt, and glad to know that I would have been okay when this kid also ran a red light the other day, and just barely missed me as I was going through the intersection. :o

I have to agree that my first 01cls that I totaled amazingly held up well in my accident also. I only came out with burns from the airbags deploying and my passenger was sore from the seatbelt. But from the circumstances I was pleasantly suprised. Definately the reason I decided to go with another one. Good to hear the wife is ok.

Glad to hear your wife is OK.

Safety has never been a major selling point for me when purchasing a car, however, luckily the cars that I have been interested in have been built well.

I'm glad I haven't had to test it out *knock on wood*, but am happy to know that my car will take care of me if the situation arises.

Yea my car held up pretty well after i had got railed by a fire engine that blew a red light with no sirens or nothing. Me, my girlfriend and her friend all walked away without a scratch. it was in the shop for a month but better it taking the beating than me.
