cheap weekend car?

any ideas on what i can get under $5k for a fun weekend car. i'd like something sporty- old school american muscle would be cool, but i don't have a whole lot of room to work on the car all the time.

Since you like the American muscle idea, the Mustang 5.0 idea might be exactly what you're looking for. Not much beat a V8 rumble!

However, I strongly recommend a convertible - if your summer weather allows it. The Mustang is certainly available that way, but so are Miatas. A TR6 Triumph calls out to me on occasion, but I want a Jeep.

The Jeep is a four season rig. Snow? No big deal. Summer? Take off the lid and doors. If you step up a hair in the dough department, I think you'd find lots of nice 4.0L Wranglers (upto '95). While the older CJs look great, they're just plain old and likely quite a bit less reliable with all the previous shade tree mechanics! I personally think they're over-priced since you can spend the same $5-7.5K on a 70's or 90's vintage Jeep! Same with the great looking Toyo FJ40s.
