Car got STOLEN!!!

Thank god it wasn't my TL. But it was my mom's Accord. It was stolen in Irvington today between 1-3 pm. She left it in a residential parking lot and when she came back, it was gone. The one time she doesn't use the club, it focking happens. I know it doesn't make a big difference with the club but at least they don't want to go thru with the hassle of getting it off. There were no broken glasses so they probably slim jimmed it. Well we reported to the cops and the insurance company so let's see what happens.

BTW, does anybody know how insurance works on a stolen car? I know if they don't find it then we can collect. What happens if they find it and it was totalled? Or if it is repairable? Basically, what is going to happen with the insurance? We have State Farm.

Here is a description of my mom's accord, just in case any of you guys see it around in Irvington or anywhere else:

- 1990 Accord LX 4-doors
- Beige/Cream color
- Hood is losing it's paint job
- Little rusting on the right rear passenger tire wheelwell
- Has a green jade figurine hanging from the rearview mirror w/red tassle
- ~150-155K miles
- whole new muffler system
- new wiper blades

Basically it was very well kept for a 13 year old car. I am pissed as hell right now. Hope whoever stole it burn in focking hell! :flamer:

Sorry but I need to vent!

if a stolen car is BRAND new, then you wont get as much as the car is really worth (like if it gets stolen 1 day after you buy it, im sure you'll only get like 75% or so). I think though that you'll get like 2 grand maybe?

insurance is supposed to pay replacement value.

but, most likely she wouldn't have had full coverage on a 13 year old car.

so there would be no coverage

If there is a total loss on a brand new car you should do better than 75% of the value. That is insane. I had the unfortunate luck of having a brand new car that was 4 weeks old be a total loss. In my case there was no previous year's model so they deducted 15 cents a mile. Maybe I was fortunate but I actually made out in the deal.

When I did the deal they took like 2k off the price of the car by jacking up my trade in value. So when the loss happened they took the total price, added sales tax, and deducted 15 cents a mile for 1500 miles. It was a number of years ago so it might be different today. I actual made out on the deal. Of course considering karma, my refrigerator went two weeks after and the money went to a new one ...

Whoa, sorry to hear it. After an investigation, you will be reimbursed the fair market value of the vehicle less your comprehensive deductible. Your insurance rates will not increase.

Trust me, you do NOT want this vehicle to be found. My gf's 89 Camry was stolen back in 1999. It was recovered shortly after in someone's front yard after it bounced off a telephone pole. The thieves (3 neighborhood juveniles) were still in it and critically injured... The kid who was driving had severe head trauma. What followed was both an exercise in patience and a nightmare of bureaucracy and affidavits. The claim was finally settled in October of 2001.

Parts baby parts. Used cars are a bigger market than new ones. Here's how it goes:

Used car parts stay mostly domestic but some are shipped to South America. Your typical scumbag auto repair shop (THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD GET DEALER SERVICE UNLESS YOU KNOW YOUR MECHANIC) buys the stolen parts and resells them to a customer as new or nearly new but makes tons of profit on the part since he probably gave some crack fiend $20 for a freakin airbag / steering wheel.

I work right next to Newark for the past 6 years and I talk to alot of Newark cops. Typically, a used car can be stolen, stripped down to the frame and parted out in less than 3 hours. These chop shops have like 15 guys literally rip the car apart like NASCAR speed. The parts are then scattered, everything is salvagable. Since most new cars are warrantied, it's not worth taking.

New cars are usually box trucked down to get shipped to South America where SUV's and Japanese luxury cars are in high demand.

Your best case scenario is you had kids or joyriders jack your mom's car. They'll find it hopefully not too fucked up but Irvington is a BAD part of town man.

Good luck buddy.

If it's not recovered withtin 30 days, you are reimbursed for the actual market value of the vehicle. If you want to find out an exact number, go to www.kbb.com. Insurance companies typically give out full KBB value, or slightly less, depending on the condition of the vehicle prior to theft.

If it is recovered, however, then the real headache starts. Depending on how much damage there has been done to the car, the insurance company will decide whether it's totalled or not. Your mom's car is worth approximately 3,000 dollars right now. If there is more than 2,250 dollars' worth of damage done to the car, then it is totalled. (if it exceeds 75% of the market value of the car).

Is the car running good? Is it in decent condition? Do you need this car everyday? If you drive this car everyday, then you better hope that they find the car in good condition. If it gets totalled, you get 3,000 dollars. BUT, where can you find a 3,000-dollar car that you KNOW and can trust to a certain extent?

My dad's 1989 Oldsmobile beater was stolen and it was recovered 3 days later. It was damaged to hell and back. It was totalled. We got a fair price on it, but it was impossible to find a car for 2 grand that we knew we could trust. That Oldsmobile was kept ridiculously clean and maintained.

What I'm trying to say is, it's not how much the car is worth on the street. But rather, it's how much worth it is to YOU (not in dollars, but rather in needs).

Good luck and car thieves are the worst people in the world, next to doctors and lawyers and college professors.

I'd better start looking after my 93 accord. I leave that thing unlocked in the middle of no where... didn't think anyone would want that piece of junk...

It is pretty ghettoized though - Driver's side door is caved in a bit, can open & close it but can't lock from that side, and rust everywhere. It does have an air freshener inside though, so I should be careful.

Honda Accord, especially the older ones, like your moms, is the number one stolen car. Accord and the Camry.
Sorry man, it really sucks, but maybe its a good thing because your mom will get more for it than it's worth on the open market and hopefully will be able to get something nicer. Let us know how it works out since I am pretty interesting myself.

Thanks for all the help guys.

At least it was full coverage on it. I also hope that the cops don't find it either.

Anyways, my mom is already asking me to look up any 2002 honda/toyota truck so we can get 0% apr and no down payment. Any ideas?

What the hell are you talking about? I don't have a teg.

FYI, her 90 Accord is in great condition and it had over 150K miles.

You'll be amazed at what thieves want. Unless your car is a rust bucket otherwise it's fair game.

If they do recover the vehicle, be there when the Insurance Adjuster goes over the vehicle for damage assessment. That's when they make the decision to total it or not. Be there, but don't get in the way. Sweet-talk the hell out of him/her. It usually works, especially in this case since we're not talking about that much money. No offense. To insurance companies, 3,000 dollars is like a penny lying on the ground.

Based on my experience and what I have heard and read, they will most likely total her car. It's a 1990, worth 3 grand. They will make money by cutting you a check and selling the vehicle to some company that sells parts.

Good luck.

you are correct that insurance companies will pay the market value for your car, however do not go by Kelley Blue Book at that is retail value. Check either edmunds.com or NADA as they are market valuations, not retail.
