Bypass or No Bypass...

I know this Topic has beaten like a dead horse but I am just curious if anyone has had a hydrolock problem or even knows someone that did.... I live in Chicago so we get pretty crappy weather, but I am still not sure if it's necessary.

If it did happen to you or someone you know, please list the conditions under which it happened... Was it just a rainy/snowy day or were they driving through a flood??

Thanks for the input guys!!

I would say that 99% of the people who have a CAI have not and will not experience Hydrolock, regardless of their location.

That being said.... just get the By-pass. The thing costs $45 and will be protecting your engine which costs around $6000 - $7000. Plus, if you don't have the by-pass and you are in that 1% of people who have hydrolock... you can forget about getting the car fixed under warranty, and saving the $45 will cost you A LOT more. At least with the by-pass, you'll have piece of mind, just in case......

Oh yeah, and you should take your own advice and do a search for other opinions as there are many of them !!

It's not the $$$

Maybe I should have been more clear here...

I'm not worried about the extra $40-50... My concern is that the bypass would take away some of the performance gains from the CAI. Maybe that's not even true.... it all depends on who you ask!!

it doesn't take anything away... and if it does... nothing noticable, so I'd still get it.

You're right that you'll get different answers about the performance thing, but is 1/2 HP to 1HP worth $6k?? To me it's not....

I bought both, but I installed it w/o a bypass, it sounded to me like this: I'm installing the CAI for power increase, so why bother.
if you lose ~1hp lost (at least) vs. 8-10 hp increase, then thats 10-13% decrease.

The chances the you will Hydrolock are the same chances that the whole car (most of it) will be submerged in water, in that case you have other things to worry about than just the intake.

my $.02

Thanks John, that will be helpful to see the diff on a dyno...

Also, I see you're from Park Ridge, I work in Oakbrook and live South. Where did you have the work done on your car??

I am looking for a good shop.

Hey John, would you buy the VFC controller again? does it help with all of you fuel enhancements?

I would wait on the V-AFC. If its true that an ecu mod is around the corner, I would wait. There have been issues with the V-AFC. John will be getting his car dyno tested again shortly.

Thanks, Yeah I have been waiting for a decent electrical upgrade. The weapon-r seems very promising and isn't the AEM ecu management sysytem supposed to be comming out in aCL compatible form? Sorry about the thread..
I have a bypass and wouldn't have bought the CAI if there wasn't one availible (and I live in AZ). I would go for a short ram if you're not going to bypass. But really it won't probaly EVER matter, just apiece of mind. But I can't justify "loss of performance" for the sole reason not to put on a bypass. IMO.

For the record, there have been CLS's who have hydrolocked their car engine.

If I recall someone even did it with the stock air box.
