broke off a 740il
it was about 6:30pm i was coming home from Palos verdes. (mountain biking) had my bike on my trailer hitch rack cruisin down hawthorne. some numb-nut in a mid 90's 740il couldn't wait for me to go by, he hits the gas makes a right turn right in from of me. i had to slam on my brakes and swerve into the right lane. i told myself it's on now. i was at his rear bumper and he was gaining speed. he was WOT from the time he cut me off. after i quickly got over the fact that i almost ran into him i punch it in 3rd at about 4k rpm. after evening out the momentum i pulled him pretty good. by 7000 rpm in 3rd i had half a car between are two bumpers. i guess that was all he could stand he hit his brakes and made a left. bummer i didn't get the chance to practice my sign language. all that extra weight really slows em down....
it was much slower than the 540's i've ran.

Nitpicking here but is there such a thing as a 740il in anything other than the Will Smith song? My ex-roomate worked at the BMW Gallery in Norwood and he cringed when he heard that song since he said there was no such thing as a 740"il"...only a 740"i".

he must have left it in d instead of dropping it do 3 and sports mode. NO way you would out run a v8 esp if your stock even if u have a 6 speed in triple digits. Also if he WOT on the 7 his car would of downshifted but still been in 4th.
I've had a typeS + intake/header/exhaust and other suspension mods and could not catch a 540, shit he almost rammed into the rear of me when I was WOT in 3rd gear

i've also ran a 540i in my cl-s. he pulled me from 75-100 but from 100-120 mph i was on his ass.

03' tl-s (wife's car) both 5mo old.
my cl-s had the usual bolt-ons i/h/e and ran against my friends 6 speed w/ a K&N drop in just like yours, dead even until end of 3rd which my cl-s creeped up enough to have my rear bumper on the 6speed's front bumper, the bmw v8's are not 0~60 sprint cars they are 80+ highway cars, I would love to see your 6 speed keep up w/ a 540, let alone a 740 on the highway. also when u drove the 7 did u drive it in D or 4 sport, the reason why I ask is D starts u in 2nd gear and S has more agrresive shift patterns and holds each gear longer.

i drove the piss out of the 740 in every gear.....
and what was supposed to happen?
it's just too heavy for a small v-8

i would be happy to duplicate my runs with either the 540 or the 740 if there is someone in the southbay that's up for it.
my next door niegbor has a 97 740i but he's an older guy 55+
and he rubs his car with a diaper i don't think he'll do it but i'll ask him if he wants to get whoooped by a jap car......
my business partner has a 99' 540i 6spd. 0-60 i can get my nose out in front but after that he pulls me no questions about it.
they do have a nice power band for a v8.
my business partner would be up for a video run i'll try to set it up
with his 540i 6spd. yeah i know i'm gonna get whooped but some times you have to take one for the team.....
anyways i'm not a bmw hater, actually i'm thinking about selling my boat and getting an m3 coupe 6spd.

EVANCRUZ, sorry to be the one to break it to ya bro, at 80+ your CLS IS NOT GOING TO PULL ON THAT HEAVY ASS V8 740i(L). Shit, when my TL had I/H/E/VAFC, a damn 740iL was closing in on me at around 105 by 120 I had to move or he would have ran me over.
Yes, the CLS is "pretty" quick off the line but no highway crusier like the 4.4 of the Bimmer or the GS4's motor. Off the line, you should be able to shit all over the 740 unless you can't drive stick, but as Nova stated, the 7's have to be driven in S mode or the car will launch in 2nd (same goes for the 540i). 540i6 is not THAT much faster thane 540iA...as a matter of fact, the 540iA SP launches harder due to its higher ratio rear end diff. 3.15 vs 2.81, not sure if Nova has 3.15 but I think he does cuz he has Sports Package.
If you were in the DC area, I know for a fact that Nova's crazy ass would race you.

when i ran the 540iA on the freeway it wasn't just one run.
it was 10+ miles roughly from Buena park to yorba linda CA.
in & out of 3rd to 4th gear, 75-100, 100-120mph. probably 6 times with the same results. now i can't tell you what was going on in his car. did he have his a/c on?, did he have a full tank of gas?, did he have bricks in his trunk?....... but it was late nite 12:30am or so about 70 deg. 30% hum +/- . i had a 1/2 tank of gas and about 3500miles on my car.these are the variables of racing. will i pull every 740i or 540i of course not. there are plenty of cl's out there that would hand me my ass. but for you to say.

Actually, I should have asked this first...are you stock? If you have H/I/E on a 6 spd, then I would say your run sounds about right, if stock, maybe he didn't push as hard or something is wrong with his car?
At the time, my car wasn't that fast compared to other German cars, but was faster than what you've experienced....now I don't even bother anymore with any V6 cars and even most V8s.
