Lightbulb Battery Terminal Replacement

Hey all,

Dumb question... anyone ever replace a battery terminal? My positive (red) terminal got corroded when the battery decided to upchuck and it broke... so I need a new terminal. Is this an easy thing to do? Normally I'd go to the dealer, but since the car is not on the road, this makes that option fairly difficult. I've replaced batteries before on several kinds of cars... but never a terminal.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys

I've seen a couple threads over in the 2nd Gen TL section about this.

Checked it out... mainly battery issues. No one really talking about replacing terminals....

You can buy a replacement terminal that attaches to the cable with a clamp and a couple of bolts. Wal-Mart may have them or almost any auto parts house.

You could also replace the whole cable if you wanted to-I've never done it on an Acura but it shouldn't be anymore difficult than a Ford.

In the old days the positive battery cable went straight to the starter solenoid, so this is probably the case on the acuras too..

The starter is below the battery, so just trace the wire back and you'll see how long a cable you need.

I like replacing the whole cable instead of just putting a new terminal end on, but you could just cut the old terminal off (what's left of it), and put a replacement one on...

Just make sure you get the newer style terminal so it'll fit under the plastic terminal cover.... The older style are ALOT bigger then the newer ones...

Thanks for the replies guys. The good news is that the car is not on the road, so I don't need to do this right away... but I'm leaning towards replacing the whole cable.

Worse case scenerio I'll put my wife's plates on the car and take it to the shop right down the road (about 2 miles away). They did some work on my wife's old Camry and did an excellent job... and were also very reasonable.

I had the dealer replace my negative battery cable on my 2001 CL-S after trying a non-OEM battery (Sears Diehard)....it wouldn't allow the battery cover to fit, so I resorted back. Doing this must have screwed up the ring terminal on the cable- it got streched out or something, because when I reinstalled the OEM battery, the cable would fall off the terminal with a little tug. I had to bust out the dremel tool and go to Autozone to get a temp battery cable for an emergency repair on Sunday evening in the driveway......I don't recommend it!
