Is anyone worried that the Unichip is going to be a "tranny killer"?

After adding the UR pulley set the extra power of the engine seems to be much more pronounced and I find myself worrying more about pushing the tranny too hard.

Do you all think that the addition of the Unichip, which may put a H/I/E/P/U car at around 250-255 whp, is going to just be too much for our weak links to handle?

I hate the feeling that any given redline run is going to chew up our tranny!

The real problem with the tranny isn't the power, it's the oiling passages that don't properly lube and cool, especially in the 2nd to 3rd gear range.

Check the lengthy report posted by EricL on the problems with the Honda tranny in our cars.

Don't worry. A local dealer in MD (one I won't publicly post anymore for fear of losing their trust) is supportive of the Uni-Chip. PM me if you want details.

Not all dealers are created equal.

Not many dealers will show up at your Honda/Acura meets with their hooked up rides. I doubt any other Acura dealership will show up at the track on a Friday night with their S/C cars and think it is cool you are there with yours.

Obviously my dealer is something special

I don't think you're gonna be pushing ~250whp with H/I/P/E/U ... Headers will give you about 30whp up high, and intake will give you ~10whp or so up high ... but most people who dyno with H/I/E only put down about ~230whp ... Exhaust isn't gonna add anything too significant, and the Unichip should provide about 10whp across the entire RPM range ... which means you'd put down maybe 240whp.

The pulleys give most of their gains in the low rpm range... so I wouldn't necessarily add the gains for the pulleys onto your max whp.

Don't forget you can just add the max gains for mods together and figure out your total horsepower because different mods give their max gains at different rpms..

I think the tranny can probably handle an extra 10whp from the Unichip, if it can handle the ~230whp, it isn't gonna have problems with an extra 10 or so. Most likely if your tranny is gonna go, it'll go regardless of the bolt-on modifications you have ... The only mod which might cause the tranny to go sooner is the supercharger.

I plan on adding the tranny cooler soon after the chip for added protection.

When I was at the track and my service manager and service advisor (as well as a few techs) showed up we got to talking about the Hondata flash for the RSX (which they support) and I said Uni-Chip was making a chip for the CL-S but I wasn't sure if I was going to get it (bold face lie, deposit had been in for 2 months ) He said "what are the gains?" I said "about 10-15 hp and ft-lbs throughout the band" He immediately goes "Get it!" I say "No warranty issues?" He responds "We'll take care of you."

The official dyno gave about 10-12 hp throughout the band, although that dyno was reading very low on the baseline (only 200 whp with I/H/E) As soon as I get it i'll be on the dyno and get some additional numbers.

I know a few other members mattg, derelict, LiQiCE will be on the dyno as well shortly after recieving the chip.

Not a bad idea at all.

But, I guess as mentioned earlier, if the tranny is starving for fluid it probably won't make that great of a difference to have slightly cooler fluid.

Still a good idea though.

You can get a large cooler for under $75 from what I remember when I bought one (but never got around to installing it). I think it might have even been $45.

Installing yourself, or at 'your' dealer? I've wondered what they'd charge.

Tranny's seem to be holding on the s/c applications so far so I would guess the unichip wouldn't be any different

I've been told by Jens at park ave acura that the tranny cooler doesnt do as much for the tranny as you would think. infact I asked him if I only had the money to do the tranny cooler OR the comptech stainless steel brakelines, which should I do? and he said the brakelines. so thats what I did.

The flaw is in the tranny not getting the oil to the right places in enough quantity, so it doesnt matter how cool the fluid is.
