6MT Problem

I took my CL-S 6-speed in to have the transmission looked at for a couple of issues on Monday. First, when I would accelerate in stop-in-go traffic; at just above 3000 rpm's in first, and then let off the gas and let the rpm's drop, the transmission will pop out of first when the engine speed had gotten down to about 1500-2000 rpm. It won't even stay in gear if you keep pressure on the gear-shift. I also complained about the 2nd gear harshness that so many of us have experienced. The mechanic drove the car and got the trans to pop out of gear several times, so it's not my driving style. They have inspected the linkage, mounts, and shift detents, and all are within spec. They are going to remove the transmission tomorrow to try to figure out what is wrong with it. I know that they probably will not be able to do anything with the 2nd gear harshness, but if anyone else has had any similar problems, please let me know so I can get my car back asap.

Good luck. Let the board know how you make out. My 2nd gear is a little tough at times, too. Pretty much a known issue with the 6speed.

did you buy it new? Just curious b/c I traded mine in a few months back and was having sort of the same issue's you are talking about...it wouldn't pop out of gear unless there was some bad wheel hop though...good luck

I have 9000 miles on the car, and it has done this since I got it brand new back in June of 03. I just adapted to it and didn't let the car coast down in 1st. I just heard from the dealer. Supposedly the 1st and 2nd gearset had too much play in it, thereby causing it to pop out of first. They are overnighting the parts from California, and if it works out I might have the car back tomorrow; so I'll let everybody know if this solves the problem.

My 6 also has that problem of harshness going into 2nd!!! I try to go easy going into 2nd and a couple of times it poped out, not often, but a couple of times when the car was real cold! Rest of the gears go in very smooth, just the 2nd gear goes in a little rough.

Thats def strange, I have zero hashness at any temp in any gear, and it has never popped out of gear. I'm know I have let it slow down in first also.

Officially the clutch is a 'wear and tear' item and not covered under warranty. Some dealers might goodwill it under the right circumstances if you're lucky.
Luckily neither of the 6 speeds I've had had any major shift issues. In cold weather shifting to 2nd is a little notchy but not bad, and fine after warm up.

This almost sounds to me like the syncro for 2nd gear is starting to go. You might want to take it in and have Acura check it out. It might also be the same issue that I had. BTW, my car is still sitting at the dealer because they have not gotten the first gear shift fork in yet, so I guess I've gotta drive this little Mazda 3 loner around for a while longer.

My second gear harshness has completly vanished. I don't know it it's just now "breaking in" or if the synchromesh gear oil I put in about 7500 miles ago has had an effect. Shifts great now in all temps.

My 6sp has popped out of first a few times since I bought it. Rarely does it, and when I took it to Acura they could never recreate the problem. It's documented in their files so if there is a wider epidemic I'm covered.
