6 months until.... {Navi topic}

...the new DVD for the Navi comes out. Is this the one that contains detailed maps for all areas of the US?

I will purchase that update no matter what, as long as it is reasonably priced.

So far I have been satisfied with the level of road detail in the original CD, but the UI could use a little help. Lots of mispelled location/business names. Also I'm looking forward to an updated database of businesses and phone numbers.

navi updates are $152.

you don't get any free, most of the dealers tell you that the first 2 are free, but they are "wrong" (read "lying").

by the way, it is only a rumor that the next update will have street-level detail for the entire country. i'm skeptical.

hahahaha you trying to be sarcastic?

I think I'm going to buy this one as well. I will probably buy the updates every 2 yrs, unless their is a MAJOR UPDATE in between. But I doubt their will be.

Will we get notified when the updates are available or do we have to keep asking the dealer?

I've had my car for over a year had haven't heard a thing about any updates.

I'm not sure if there is supposed to be any official notification but the updates are suppose to be available in the Fall of each year.

I'm on the CL's original CD and there's been 1 update so far that I know of. I didn't get a notification of any sort, but I got something better than an official notification for Acura....I read all about it right here on acura-cl.com!

ken: well... NavTech hasnt completed mapping the whole US yet... their supposed to early this year.

However, are we sure Acura is STILL using NavTech data? They used to in the last RL, (pre DVD days) but do they now?

I ask because Acura is no longer listed on the NavTech website... and our Navi DVD's do not have the NavTech On-Board logo that all material using NavTech data is supposed to have.

The fact that NavTech does not produce DVD based maps (that I know of) and the fact that you cant get Acura maps through NavTech (you can for other mfg'rs like BMW, MB, Jaguar) it is my suspicion that we will NOT get full mapping for sometime.

NavTech is the only map data supplier that has made any announcement that they will map the entire US.

Also, Ive noticed when using BMW, MB navs that all the street data is the same...

Where as in Lexus/Acura navs... they both have different streets. Maybe they have some sort of exclusive mapping with another company...

It would be very sad if we dont get full US mapping and others do Acura used to be on top of the Navi game... they lost this year to Lexus (who now has a SUPREME navigation system) I hope they dont fall farther behind.

We may not be able to order an update from NAVTECH but I am sure that NAVTECH is the supplier of custom made maps for Acura resale.

NAVTech is still listing Acura as a partner:

NavTech is the leader in mapping. I believe all the internet mapping services uses NavTech as well. So I would think that acura would stay with them. I think it is just up to acura what it does with the data. And what other features are added to it. Has anybody seen the pictures of the new Q45? They get birdeyes view for their navi. So i think acura better start doing some more research if they want to stay competive.

By a birdeyes view, I assume you are meaning overhead and at a slight angle. Is that really better (I've never seen it myself personally)? Unless it has 3D geographical features, I would think that it would be more difficult to navigate from behind and overhead. IMO

I don't know if it is better or not but it looks cooler. I think it would be easier to navigate that way also. Sometimes with the our navi I will turn a street to early because I can't tell when I'm supposed to turn. (using the direct on view, not the other view) But I think with the bird eye view I could get a better judge of distance.
