15K Service- Brake update

Well i took it in yesterday to Niello Acura in Sacramento for my 15k service, it cost $180 and included the Transmission service which they recommeded. I also had the AEM CAI installed, yee haa !! Heavy traffic on the way home but i still got to VTEC land a couple of times and it was SWEET !! My brakes have been getting worse by the week so i was real happy to get this appointment going. They turned my front rotors under warranty, and said my pads were fine. The car felt like new again, no brake shudder at all. Maybe i should have argued for new rotors, but these guys treated me great and i believe if they warp again they'll give me new rotors then. Who knows, maybe Acura will upgrade us to the newer TL-S rotors by then.

Godd for you , however, you should NEVER put old pads on freshly resurfaced rotors. My dealer did pads under wsarranty

Did you feel any difference in transmission shifting after they changed your tranny fluid?

Not really, of course i wasn't really noticing any problems. I'm sure it doesn't hurt and maybe i'll notice more smoothness over the next few days.

Thanks for the advice. I have confidence in my dealer i hope they were right. If not and these brakes get rough again i'll be back and won't settle for less than new rotors and pads.

its a judgement call, if the pads thickness is ok, and even level wear, it is perfectly ok to reinstall them, usually they will scuff the pads to remove the "glazing" from heat when they are reinstalled

I brought my car over to Radley Acura. At 16K, my rotors were too badly warped to be turned (run-out was 0.006"). Allegedly, it's going to be new rotors and NEW pads once the NEW-design pads arrive from "back-order" land. My service manager, a very "brake-savvy" guy admitted that a NEWER-design brake pad is being put on our car because the old pads got TOO hot and caused our rotors to freakin' WARP!!

Acura's cheesy rotors don't dissipate heat as well as the pricier cross-drilled or slotted aftermarket rotors. doh! It seems to me, you gotta demand the NEW-design PADS (if they can ever get 'em) and if your rotors ain't "turn-able" you gotta get NEW ROTORS--period!

True. I brought mine in today for an oil change and mentioned the shudder during braking. They replaced the front rotors and pads. This was the 4th oil change so it was free and I got a bottle of touch-up paint. So for an oil change, brake job and paint it cost me $5.50. AWESOME! Acura of Milford. They rock...

What exactly did you guys say to them to get the new rotors/pads. I went to acura the other day to schedule an oil change and i mentioned i had problems with my brakes. ANd that i heard the pads were defective and that i heard acura is using new ones. He said that was only on the TL but on the CL there were problems with the rotors so he said he will look at the rotors. Of course i would prefer to get new rotors which means new pads? since i have almost 20k miles on my car and im sure they hav e gone through some wear and tear. But is there anything specifically i should mention that could get the guy to give me new rotors/pads? Thanks

AirC,

I went in armed with a compilation of quotes I retrieved from a "search" of our forum from guyz who were experiencing the same problem. I'll attach my original list for you (it's even longer now -- you can add to it by following other relevant rotor/brake threads.)
__________________________________________________ ___________
“My rotors were also warped. I got them "fixed" last week. I made an appointment for three weeks earlier and went to the dealer only to find out that they didn't have replacement pads. The brake pads were on National Backorder. There is a problem! I had to reschedule the appointment for last week and all they did was resurface my rotors. (That was done under warranty) They didn’t even put the new pads on.

"That's not going to solve the problem. I'm suggesting that EVERYONE call Acura Customer Service on Monday and give them a piece of your mind. The only way we’re going to get something done is to speak-up about it.”

“…it’s not his fault the pads are on backorder, and you have to understand, mfg's anticipate a set number of replacement pads,(esp. if there is a design change) – production comes first - at any cost, replacement comes second. If pads are implemented into production as an updated parts the CL line does not stop, pdc's will have to wait for there orders as they come in from pad mfg'r. I take it the dealer has ordered the pads; when they come in you'll get them. Keep your service receipt if you have a problem with the rotors in the future, you can ask for new rotors.”

“I called up my service dept. yesterday and made an appointment for tomorrow afternoon for my 18K oil change and I told them about the brakes, and they said that they would look at them and that they would either resurface or replace them for free under warranty for me, no questions asked."

David McDavid Acura in Plano, Texas

“I got my car serviced a few weeks ago, and my mileage was at 24,000 miles…My dealer machined the rotors and installed new pads for free. This is Stevens Creek Acura in Santa Clara.”

“…the code you are referring to is an opcode (operation code) that is standard from any dealer, the opcode is what tells Acura what was done to correspond labor with or without any parts, this is not a secret code and does not imply any warranty, there may be a auth code that the dealers warranty administrator uses if it is goodwilled, but more than likely it will not show up on your bill, maybe a note at the bottom that says goodwill on rotors per service manager or something like that, probably no code”

“Why would there be a SB# on the TL and not the CL they have the same rotors and pads ...right?? ”
__________________________________________________ _________________
“I took my car in last week to get the oil changed and have them look at my brakes. My car has almost 19,000 miles and they decided to replace the rotors and the pads under warranty. I'm taking my car in this afternoon to get the new rotors and pads put on. Supposedly, they are the same rotors but different pads.”

“We must notify NHTSA.dot.gov about the brake rotor warping problems on our cars. Honda cars had brake rotor warping problems for years. Cutting the brake rotors does not solve the warping problem. After cutting the rotors they will warp even more. The rotors have to be replaced with improved rotors and brake pads. We must demand new brake rotors and brake pads-- not rotor cutting.”
__________________________________________________ _________________
“There were no codes on my printout, but it did say that both the rotors and pads were replaced.
It had my complaint of "Brakes Shimmy" and under that it said "Replace brake rotors and pads, per service bulletin" but it listed no bulletin number. I asked them if they used brand new pads, and he said yes. The brakes feel much better and seem better than when they were new.”

technoid thansk for the reply. But it seems like many people are ending up with just the cutting of the rotors vs the actual rotor and pads being replaced. I mean i doub tif i say w"ell i know many people did get them replaced" would make them give me new ones. Anything you recommend to say specifically? Thanks alot.

AirC,

The important thing to do is have the service manager get involved, and have him aware of the run-out (that is, the amount of warpage) that exists in your rotors. The factory tolerance for having them turned is ) 0.001" to 0.002." Mine were warped as much as 0.006", which meant that quite a bit had to be "turned" or removed from the rotor.

I was firm, but not an a$$hole about it, and pointed out that on the 2 previous Acuras that I had purchased from Radley Acura, I NEVER had this kind of a wear problem with my rotors. It also helped that I had just recieved Acura's national survey inquiring about my dealer's service quality, and I did mention that I would be responding to the survey AFTER my brake situation was resolved.

BTW, before I went into the dealer, I had called Acura's 1-800 number, and they told me that if I wasn't satisfied with the results, that I should call them back. Armed with that and the quotes from the threads to back me up when I went into Radley, I felt that I wasn't completely helpless.
