* * Help me decide to keep my CL * *

So I've had my wonderful CLS for a couple years now (3 to be exact) and I'm pushing 115K on the ticker. I have really be contemplating the purchase of a new car. I was looking at the 328 coupe 2007 or even the new A5.
If I buy it will be less than 2 years.

I would really like to keep my CL and run it till the wheels fall off.
My commute: 80mi round-trip 5 days a week.

If i bought the new car, i would also get a little "beater" civic or something to commute in because I obviously dont want to put that many miles on my new car....

If I decide to keep my CL, what could I do to it to make it marginally better.
** MARGINALLY** means no FI or SC nothing drastic I dotn really want to pump in larger amounts of $$$

Chime in everyone!

Sell me on it!

I was thinking about that but I'd hate to spend 20k on a civic when i'd rather spend the $$ on a 328ci or A5 =(

Hmm.... either case, i think im gonna need to get a beater civic witrh good MPG

You're similar to my situation.. Bought at 50k miles 2 years ago, now at 120k.

If the car is paid off (mine is) or close to being, drive it into the ground because you're getting free miles out of the thing. Our high mileage cars won't get much on the market so you'll just be throwing away a reliable daily driver.

Just get a 2nd car as a toy on the side and enjoy that. Nothing like having a toy to beat on knowing that you have a reliable means of transportation at home if something goes wrong.

I just saw that you have an 80mi round trip, same with me, lol. Definitely keep the car as a DD.

Keep it until the tranny craps out.

and for to make it marginally better: UR crank pulley (around $180 +belts if you go underdrive) and headers ($88 or $1200) FTW, both are maintence free once they are installed and provide nice gains.

Dump it. If you have the means I see no reason to keep any car past 100K miles. Just doesn't make sense for me.
But then again I don't get attached to cars or car brands.

Also look at your situation. You drive a ton of miles, your driving an 01 car that is no longer made & resale/trade in is garbage, with high miles, with a ticking time bomb for a transmission, plus if you haven't already done it you need to change the timing belt, & a full tune up with new plugs.

Why do that? The car is out of warranty. So keep the car until the tranny craps out? When that happens he will have to put $3,000 into the car just in order to sell it/drive it. Screw that logic.

Even if the tranny does crap out he can get it replaced for free if he goes through the loops like most have on here.

115k is a lot, but there are other members on here with more. I don't see the big deal on keeping it. Just keep it tuned and she'll keep you square.

02cls is right, you sold yourself on keeping the car.

Suggest if you LIKE your car, that you keep it. It beats hell out of new car payments. Consider doing something relatively low cost like suspension mods or new tires/wheels or change the front grille to make her look new(er) or add XM Satellite radio to make the driving experience newer or different (which is really good in my opinion).

If on the other hand, you dont like it any more and want something else, then by all means sell (ebay is a good way) or trade (if you must), to get what you want.

Car decisions are seldom economic decisions, other than how big a monthly payment you can afford. For enthusiast owners like us, it's really more of an emotional decision.

Well I see it as, if your going to drive it until the wheels fall off, the trans will almost for sure dump first and you can usually tell its messing up way before it becomes undriveable. So sell it when it starts to act up.

You could always buy a used civic/corolla and still be able to keep your CL.

if the car made it to 115K and it is still in good working order keep it. having no car payment is a very nice thing. even if you did have to put a trans in, $3-5K is cheaper than whole new car........

I leave my car in the garage and drive a scooter to work

F putting a new tranny in on your own dollar, H/A knows they tried to fix a terminal injury with a band-aid and they just pulled a con by people accepting the 109k warranty. Old school honda beater FTW, new beemer FTL IMO, but at least you get comprehensive maintenance program. With an upscale/luxury car you should expect better than average treatment and service, the Benz dealership always took care of me. They took care of me better than Acura ever has, and I am a 3 time Acura owner

EDIT: Fit is go! Or whatever those wacky ass commercials say...

I'm in the same boat as you, I love my CL but just don't know if I want to wait around for the tranny to go... again. I'm at 89k miles right now and everytime I feel the tranny do something that seems out of the ordinary I start buggin out, like the suttle surging in D5 on the highway. I'm just waiting for it to drop to 2nd gear and send me out of control.

So lately I've been driving in SS mode al the time instead of leaving it in D5. I swear I feel like I'm driving a totally different car. It's the best I can do until I can afford a new car with a manual trans.

It's a tough call. I think once I hit 105k miles and have to do the timing belt/water pump/tune up I'll probably wish I had sold it now when I can at least get what I owe on it. I have a love/hate relationship with my CL right now. I love when I pull on someone not knowing what the CL is capable of but I hate when I'm just cruising along and I feel like my tranny is slipping.

I think you also have to figure in what else is going on in your life currently. For instance I'm about to by an engagment ring and then will probably be looking to sell my condo and upgrade to a house, so affording an upgrade to the CL wouldn't be possible right now, for me.

I was actually talking to my friend the other day about possibly down grading and getting a 1999-2000 Civic Si until I can buy a new G37 or Mustang GT. Of course an 03 CL 6 speed wouldn't be out of the question either. With my luck the day I sell my CL someone will invent a tranny overhaul shift kit that will make our trannys bullet proof!

A tough call it is!
I just graduated college and want to put about 50% down on my student loan when the 6 month grace period comes. I only owe about 12k and dont have any major plans right now...

I have about two years left on my CL and I'm a little upside-down on the loan. I keep thinking man if I dump it now, i will only pay for 3 more years, as opposed to waiting 2 years and then getting into a 5 year loan after that

damm decisions!
