Switched to winter tires... OUCH!!!

Well, I decided it was time to put my Blizzak WS-50s on and to my surprise, here is what I pulled off my car. OUCH!!!

Tires: Yokohama ES100 225/45 R17s
Alignment: 32,000 miles on odometer
Tires put on: 36,500 miles
Current Odometer reading: 46,000 miles

I'll be heading to the alignment shop tomorrow to verify the alignment is still good. If it is in spec, I'll have them do an alignment with me in the trunk (195lbs).

Lesson learned, rotate more often. So much for 2 summer tires.

there has got to be something the screwy with your alignment because that just doesn't happen without a screwy alignment...

Trust me, I know. It was dialed in perfectly at 32k miles... I have the sheet. Now I did just take a trip to VA (round trip is about 1100 miles) with a loaded car.

Just an FYI, the left tires are the fronts and the right tires are the rears.

That sucks! I'm curious to see which alignment setting causing the wear.

I believe new tires can change the alignment, maybe it was have more tread or stiffer rubber that caused some toe? go get your car aligned with the ES100's on and see how it comes up

yeah, definitely ouch! I do a rotate every 5k miles, especially since I have summer tires..they wear out quicker than stock. I also inspect my tires every car wash

Wow...that's pretty bad man. I'm curious about your alignment too. Everything is fine with your camber kit right?

I rotated mine at every 5k miles too. Those rears stayed on for about 6k miles b/c I took a trip right after I changed the oil and didn't have time to rotate them.

I've already got the winter WS-50s on, but I'm still going to take it in for an alignment.

Here are the results of my alignment when the OEM POS tires were still on it (FYI, I have the Ingall kit for those that don't know me).

I'm usually very good about this too, but I admittedly got caught up in a bunch of different things.

I get the exact same pattern of tire wear. I'll try and take pictures.

It would actually be worst if I didn't keep the pressure at 38PSI. (I need to mention that I often drive my car with pretty heavy loads)

Yeah, I checked it last night when I had the rear jacked up to put the snow tires on. All the bushing looked great, everything felt very solid.

Assuming that everything is okay with the alignment, the only thing that could've done this is my trip to VA over Thanksgiving when I had the car loaded down. That would've increased negative camber and toe. Over a 1000 mile round trip, I'm sure that summer tires would've worn quickly.

Nah, just $113 ea. It is only costly b/c I got a whooping 10k out of them and there is obviously plenty of tread left... so I am more pissed at myself for not paying closer attention, though with that kind of wear, I may not have been able to lessen it (assuming it was the trip under heavy load that did it).

Thread #26756 in particular mentions the same issue, as does #26673. So, who covers the cost of an annual alignment check and regular tire rotation vs putting up with abnormal tire wear and handling issues?

Slightly different issue. I'm lowered 1", have a camber kit and a nearly perfect alignment dialed in about 14k miles ago. I'm not sure this is even abnormal because obviously a loaded car will increase negative camber and toe. Question to be answered later today is if something changed.

Just got back from Performance Alignment here in Ohio and the owner (who is also a race car driver) explained my tire wear is definitely from the trip and being loaded down. He said with out a doubt that all the added weight would definitely contribute to the tire wear. I'll be posting my updated alignment, which he did for free... that was really cool of him.

Here is my updated alignment. Guess it should be noted, don't load your car down for an extended trip on performance tires.

Although the rear camber was close, something happened on the toe to the passenger rear. I certainly don't recall anything. Additionally, my tire guy did say to have an alignment done when I switch back to my summer tires since it would most certainly have an effect.

Actually, I felt there was a pull to the left... since you just sparked that memory. I think that one was due to a huge pothole I hit.

In any case, the car obviously need an alignment now that I put snow tires on it. Just crazy. I don't recall once having to worry about alignment on my BMW, but then, I didn't have but 1 set of tires and the suspension was stock. Not complaining though, the car is great even afte 46k miles and 2 yrs.
