It's a wireless system. The sensor just takes the place of the valve stem (it actually is the valve stem). That said, I've never replaced one. I have read here though that the cars' computer may not recognize the new sensor(s). I'd call or visit your dealer's service or parts department; they should be willing to tell you if there's anything else that needs to done (if there's something in the diagnostic computer that needs to be reset for instance). You should share the end of this story, since with the arrival of this system (which I have no use for by the way), I'll guess questions surrounding it will become more common. It would also be interesting to hear from those that have decided to run wheels without sensors on cars equipped with the system (like me). When the snows (not tpms equipped) go on my wife's 07, I'm curious what kind of "the world's coming to an end" message shows up on the MID. Gotta love the nanny state.

My new snows are now on, and my new alloy wheels are tpms compatible but the tire place neglected to transfer the sensors from my stock wheels to the winters. Was going to have them transfer everything, but since the only "end of the world" message that shows on the MID is "Check TMPS system" when you start the engine (disappears except for the "i" when you press the "info" button, I think I'll just deal with it this winter and splurge on new sensors next winter! I check the pressure manually anyway, out of habit. And oddly, I had to drive quite a while before the car realized the sensors were no longer in close range of the car...! Better wireless transmission then many cell phones ;-)

I found that too. I went about 4 miles with a couple of the snows on and they weren't recognized as not TPMS equipped. My wife can live the yellow "i".

If I bought aftermarket rims, the TMPS indicator would always be on then correct?

If you don't have the sensors installed in the new wheels, then the MID will show the warning each time you start the car. Once you scroll past it, only the little yellow "i" remains to warn you that there is (the system thinks) a low pressure condition. When I changed over to the winters, I went over 40 miles before the system realized the wheels didn't have sensors in them.

So, the sensors can be installed on any aftermarket rim correct? From what I've read, they are the valve stems themselves... So the valve stems are the same size as the normal valve stems? Can you just take the stem out and put it on the new rim?
