Warped rotors
Does anybody know if Acura will resurface or put in new rotors under warranty? I have an '04 with less than 20,000 miles. I've also complained to them before that the wheel was shaking when I stepped on the brakes, but they said they couldn't duplicate what I was saying. I just want to know if they will fix it for free now that it's worse? Thanks in advance for your info.

The problem seems to happen when slowing down from higher speeds (ie: 50 - 65mph).
Let me me/us know what your dealer offers.

it depends on the individal dealer..... I used to have a 99 CL and the rotors were blended while it has less than 24K km coz it was over-heated. I first took it to a nearby dealer but they would resurface it only...... another 20K km later... it started blending again..... Then I took it back to the same dealer and wanna file a claim for a replacement rotor but they refused. Their reason was it was a wear and tear and that could not covered by warranty. I disagreed and took it to the one where I bought it.... they order the parts for me once I called for an appointment without even doing an inspection.
That is all I can say.... if your dealership is a responsible one... they shall be replacing it for you without a question.
Good Luck!!

Previously I got a blown tire in the rear right wheel. I replace it with a new one and moved it to the front. I also replace the the left one to match. So now I'm drving on two new tires in the front and oems in the back. I had it checked out and rebalanced numerous times, but nothing's changed. I've been driving like this for a couple months now and rebalanced it at least 3 times. My next option is to get it checked out at the tire shop for warped rotors. That's why I want to know if the dealer will fix them if they are warped.

At my 10K service the dealer said that they resurfaced my rotors as needed and cleaned my pads.
They said they did this but I don't know if it's true because I physically didn't view it and the brakes weren't bad.

I had the dealer repalce my rotors 3 times. After 4 sets and the same problem occuring over and over I switched to aftemarket rotors. I've only had them on a few thousand k so I'm not sure if the problem will return.

I just had my 05 serviced at 10K miles and asked them to look at the right front rotor while they were rotating the tires because there was some pulsing when I hit the brakes. Sure enough, it needed resurfacing. They fixed it under warranty.
Now I have another problem I need to have looked at. At the front of the hood, there is an spot about the size of my fist where it looks like the clearcoat is lifting off of the paint and causing discoloration of the area.

don't worry. i did mine under warranty with 48k km. I am in Canada. assuming you guys in states get equal or better warranty, with 20k miles, this rotor problem would be fixed under warranty. go to an acura dealer and ask.

In either case, once your pads get to the end of life, switch to a better compound and an aftermarket rotor. Solved my issues and I've never had it again. 48k miles of hardcore breaking.

I had this problem around 15K and the dealer fixed it no charge. Not exactly sure what they did but now I am at 45K and the problem has not resurfaced.
btw, I replaced the back pads myself as they started failing at around 40K. When I took the roters to be resurfaced they laughed at how weak and thin they were.

Yes, Acura will replace your warped rotors... I've had my 04 done twice since I've had her. As Moda_way says the best thing next to a suspension upgrade will be to upgrade brake rotors and upgraded brake pads!!! This will be my next mod for sure!!!

It seems that on my car, every time I back it out of the garage the brakes squeal a bit. Like until they warm up a bit they make a real dull squeal. My car got back from the dealer this week and they still do it for about 2 minutes after I back the car out of the garage. No biggie just annoying.

My rotors seem to be warped too because I feel a slight vibration when I step on the brakes. When I have people in the car, I don't think I'm gonna' stop and I really have to pound on them. Compared to my dad's TL brakes, the TSX's are horrible and he has 27K miles and I only have 19K... Time to bring her in

Just had my rotors turned at 23,000 (highway) miles. The dealer covered it under warranty since the pads were in good shape. I'm guessing it's a common issue because there was absolutely no question, they just did it without asking. I have since learned that I should have demanded NEW rotors AND NEW brake pads. Old pads on new or turned rotors will not give you 100% braking power - I guess I'll see how long this lasts.

I'd never turn a Honda rotor, even when putting new pads on while the rotors are still good. They barely have enough mass to absorb the heat when the car is new and turning them just makes it worse. When they warp, replace them.
My old Integra rotors would warp immediately anytime they were turned, so I finally told the dealer to quit turning them. I got over 120K miles out of the next set after that, even though the pads went at 60K.
Brakes need to be properly broken in (with various schools of thought on how this should be done). Basically the pad material is going to collect on the rotor, so the idea is to ensure it is done uniformly. Leaving the pad stuck to a hot rotor (e.g. quickly coming to a stop and then leaving the brakes engaged) is the quickest way to leave a deposit on a new rotor. So, I advise gentle brake usage for the first 200 miles or so of a new rotor.
Another way to break them in can be found here: (The article is about a different car, but the ideas about brakes rotor materials and adaptation to the pad don't vary much between cars)

Here is the exact language from the TSB (as this isn't just a TSX thing)
00-037
October 28, 2003
Applies To:
ALL Models
Brake Disc Refinishing Guidelines
Updated information is shown by asterisks.
(Supersedes 00-037, dated June 2, 2003)
American Honda does not allow replacement of brake discs under warranty unless the brake disc is beyond its service limit for refinishing. If the brake disc is within its service limit, you must refinish it. You can find the maximum refinishing limits in the Conventional Brakes section of the appropriate service manual (Power-Assisted Brake System section for the SLX).
You need to refinish brake discs every time they are replaced. You also need to refinish brake discs when they become scored, or if there is pulsation when the brakes are applied.
American Honda recommends two tools for brake disc refinishing: the Kwik-Way Brake Lathe and the KwikWay Power Drive System. These tools let you refinish both front and rear brake discs on the vehicle for most Acura models. On-vehicle refinishing ensures against brake pulsation that can result from off-vehicle refinishing.
Interpretation.... it is solely up to the dealership whether they do something or not.

Warped Rotors
I have had a serious vibration in my '04 TSX when braking at around 60 - 70 mph. I asked the dealer to check it out at the 20K check up. He (Metro Acura), indicated that they could not duplicate the problem. It is still there at 30K. I think Acura is in denial on some issues regarding the TSX.

Just one or two problems.

They did a resurface on my brakes but I still feel the vibration at highway speeds.
The 10K service was just last week and they rotated the tires also. Do you guys think it's the tires or the brakes that are causing the steering wheel to shimmy at those speeds????????

The rotors on my 04 TSX warped at about 10,000 miles. The dealer that I was going to then resurfaced both front rotors under warranty. The problem returned at about 25,000 miles, and a different dealer replaced both front rotors and brake pads under warranty. I am now at 41,000 miles, and the problem has not returned.

Brakes were SQEAKING everytime I stopped. Had the dealer check and they told me the rotors were glazed, this is a 04 TSX with 27000. They said out of courtesy they will fix it. Oh come on it was still uder warranty. Well the squeaking is gone. But how long will that last ?

three thousand miles ago, had my rotors replaced as part of the warranty. The card had about 17K miles. Yesterday took my 2004 tsx back for my 20K service and the steering wheel vibrates again when at high speeds.
They resurfaced the brand new rotors they placed a few months ago and said that this will be the last time they will cover this.
The comment of the svce advisor was that if I dont use the car often, the rotors will rust and hence, this problem. Somehow I dont quite buy this, as I had a Mitsu Eclilpse before I bought my TSX and I had the same driving habbits whereby I only use the car on weekends and never had a rotor warping problem.
Is there any truth with what the service advisor said? If I dont use the car, the rotors rust faster, hence this problem? I did notice that after a month of installing the suppossedly new rotors last summer, it rusted rather quickly.
Kind regards,
Alan

old pads on resurfaced rotors will not decrease braking power. i work at a dealer and also drive an accord which is the same as a tsx. and yes honda/acura does have problem with warped rotors. it is the metal compound in the rotors the are too soft. i have my rotors cut at 14k replaced at 21k both front and rear. and now at 30k they are warped again . waiting to end of warranty and installing aftermarket rotors. going to keep oem pads.

I've had my rotors turned 3 times since I've had my '04. My TSX only has about 31K miles on it. Seems to happen around evey 10K miles. Dealer resurfaced them each time with no question and replaced the pads. But even after the third time turning them there's still a slight shimmy when stepping on the brakes at highway speed, so I think it's time to try some aftermarket discs and pads.

My suggestion would be to find a shop that can turn the rotors on the car. When I encountered this problem 3 consecutive times on my Integra, I finally decided to bite the bullet and have my mechanic machine them on the car. I didn't have another issue after that.

If not rotors ......... alignment and also having a bent rim would contribute to shimming... I had that problem. My rotors were fine... Went and got an alignment.. they told me my drop was too low to get a "good" alignment and one of my rims were bent.
