squealing brakes??

I've had my TSX (2005/AT) for about a month and a half and I started noticing my brakes are squealing. Not just when the car is cold.

Anyone else have this problem? Any thoughts on what it could be?

Never had this happen to me with another car....

Thanks

Happens to me too everyday. What I do is I brake moderately hard to get a layer off, and then there won't be anymore squeals for that day.

All it takes is for one piece of sand to get inbetween the pad and rotor... insta-squeal.

I actually had that problem too if i was rolling and then i lightly braked. When the car was almost to a stop, my brakes would squeel really bad. I sort of just ignored it and drove normally, after a couple of months it went away. I bet it was just a piece of dust or sand lodged between the pad and rotor. But after some miles, it eventually wore away.

Go to the dealership and have the rotor and brake pads cleaned. My brakes don't squeek but my previous car (Toyota) did. I had to get them cleaned every once in a while.

mine squeals everyday...took it to a dealership and they found nothing. They added some sort of lubricant to the brakes, but it started doing it again after a couple days. Guess I'll have to take it back

They lubed the brakes??? lol, that makes sense, I mean why would you want friction on your brakes?

I'd have to check on the service report to see what they did again... Right now it's 2200 miles away

lol...they did in fact lube your brakes, more specifically your shim pads, not the pad itself. Shim pads are the thin metal plates just behind your pads and they lube them with anti-squeal lube. They can also lube your caliper sliding bolt since the system is a floating caliper design.

Looking at part #3, see the thin metal plates on the back side of the pad, that's what they lubed. Also they can lube your caliper sliding bolts when a symptom of sticky brakes is reported (this is generally before they replace your caliper). Those are bolts #12, 17.

Go to the dealership and have the rotor and brake pads cleaned. My brakes don't squeek but my previous car (Toyota) did. I had to get them cleaned every once in a while.
Yeah what is it with Toyota's design that seem to get dirty awfully quick. My mom's Camry, an old 4Runner I used to have, and now I have a Tundra and all three are horrible as far as staying clean. In my Tundra, the dirt apparently was so much it scored my front rotor, I'm probably just going to replace the two front rotors instead of turning them, along with pads.

In all fairness to my mom's Camry squealing though, it's the result of uncompatible metallics to organic materials, el-cheapo rotors with Toyota pads.

I took mine to the dealer with the same problem at 3500 miles. They called me back about 4 hours later after they turned the rotors and put on new pads all the way around for free.

Is whatever is causing the squealing likely to damage the brakes/rotors/anything?

No, but it just sounds embarrasing, especially when you pull up at a stop light, and a hot blond, athletic chic is in a Jetta in the lane next to you and then she turns to you and gives you this look of "dude, get your brakes fixed before you check me out!"

Now all honeslty is some brakes do squeal because they are supposed to due to a part that serves as a noise indicator that your pads are low and wearing out. What it is, is it's simply a tab that goes on the end of your brake pads, and once you pads wear down far enough, that tab runs across your rotors and make that squealing noise. These wear indicators I generally put on the inboard pad on the bottom so they don't catch and score a rotor when they wear. Honda's apparently allow only one way to mount the wear indicator and that's top side inboard. I can't really find a good picture of one in the TSX, but here's one of the NSX's rear rotor wear indicator: It's that big tab looking thing on the end of the pad
