Replace light bulbs

Is there away to replace the two license plate lights without going to the dealer as the manual suggests?

yes, it is a royal pain in the arse....

the safest way is to remove the inner trunk lid lining, unplug the bulbs from the b/u lights/parking lights, and remove both lenses. Between the lenses, there is a small trim strip that covers most of both of the license plate lights. that will pull off... the license plate lights then have a small clip that when pushed in, will release the light housing...

The easiest way is to pry the darned thing off, but don't scratch it... have PIAA plasma blues in mine... =o)
