I did some research about that and found out that...
"American Honda is announcing a warranty extension for the audio unit display on 2004 TSXs.

In some 2004 TSXs, the audio unit could have a component failure on its printed circuit board (PCB).
This condition causes the audio display to become dark or dim, and prevents the audio/HVAC panel
buttons from illuminating. On vehicles with navigation systems, this condition does not affect the
display, but the navigation panel buttons do not illuminate.

To ensure that clients have adequate warranty coverage for this potential problem, the audio unit
display is now covered for 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first. All other features and
functions of the audio system are covered under normal warranty. "

I'm at the dealership now, getting my lights fixed (finally)!

Hope this doesn't take too long. I already checked out the cars in the showroom.

I must've jinxed myself. When I made the appointment, the service guy told me it would be a half hour or so to fix it. After an hour passed, I thought maybe something was wrong. Then at 90 minutes in the waiting room, the service dude came out and said the new circuit board they had ordered for me made the problem even worse....so now not only are all the lights out, but the clock, the radio display, and the radio and CD player itself don't work, so I have no sound either. At least the AC works, I guess.

Anyway, they sent me home with my car and are ordering a whole new radio on Monday and are having it overnighted. But this means I have to go all the way back down there (about 60 min drive), drop off the car, *hopefully* get a loaner, come home, and then do it all again when it's done. I hope the new headunit works!

Can i change my vote from "No" to "Yes, without navigation"?

damn lights went out last week. Lucky for the extended warranty on this issue, as I currently have 115,000km on the car. Bringing it in right now to get them to "inspect" (check that the lights are out before ordering the new PCB).

Argh.

That's what I thought till I saw the price. It's about $1300 to take the mileage to 88,xxx, and I already have an extra year/12k on the bumper to bumper warranty with the CPO warranty, so I'm just going to trade this sucker in when my warranty is up. I will consider a 2010 or 2011 TSX when the time comes. As it stands, I have a 2nd trip to the dealer tomorrow to fix my AC. I hope they can find what's wrong this time.

Take it to the Dealer and they'll replace the board for free. Acura extended the warrantee on this part to 8 years/80,000 miles. I just got mine done about a month ago.

Went out 2 weeks ago with Navi

Hey guys,

Mine just went out about 2 weeks ago and I have the Navi ... I was sure it was a fuse. Couldn't find a single busted fuse and just said "Meh ... the buttons still work", and put up with it for a bit.

But then Mr. Bigglesworth started getting pissed, and when Mr. Bigglesworth gets pissed, people DIE!

So a big thanks and shout out for posting that this problem recieved a warranty extension out to 7 years and 100k. I'm at about 53k now ... so good stuff. I'll be calling the dealer today to get it fixed.

Cheers!

Well this is my first post in a while. I am a Canadian who purchased an '04 Non-navi in Aug '03. My HVAC lights just went out last week. I just looked up the Canadian warranty and as it stands up here for the moment electronics are only covered for 36 months and 60,000 Kms.

I was aware of this problem in late '04 when people began to report it on this forum. Having only 30,000 Kms on a car that I have just babied for the past 4 years I figured I might be OK - no such luck! I also am beginning to see people reporting repeat occurances of the same problem which is not good, at all. For those of you who have not had the problem I am unfortuanatley beginning to think it is probably just a matter of time - much like the Air Conditioning problem that is beginning to crop up a lot more than I would like.

I was looking to buy a fully loaded MDX Elite as a second family vehicle but I am sad to report that all of this has given me pause. I have put those plans on hold until I see how all of this pans out. What concerns me the most is that Acura, a name that we have all known to trust, did not acknowledge this earlier and has charged (at least partially) many of its customers to repair a what must have been known as a flaw very early on (much like the alarming rate of early AC failures that are now being reported on this forum).

There is some good news in that Acura recently changed the TSB and extended the warranty for TXS's in the States (finally). I am hoping the same happens here in Canada. (As a side note - it appears that Honda has issued a TSB for the same HVAC problem for the '04 Honda Accord EX V-6). If Acura acknowledges and begins to cover repairs for faulty AC clutches out there I will likely re-consider the MDX, but not until then.

I find it a bit unfortunate that I am even second guessing purchasing another Acura vehicle as I had always trusted Hondas/Acuras for thier reliability in the past.

The TSB is 100% valid in Canada. I went to Camco Acura and had them look at the lights (or lack thereof), they ordered the part, and I had it installed free of charge this past Tuesday. All of the guys at Camco know of the TSB, no worries man.

But I'm sad to report that the dealership installed a nice "free scratch" on the silver trim on the pass. side next to the radio. Boooo. So I'm bringing in the car today to have the service manager (James) look at it and hopefully they replace it, as it was their fault. I'm not mad, though, as tools do slip as we're all human. As long as they rectify it, I'm happy.

my lights went out about 2 years ago, i was out of warranty and they tried charging me 1500 bucks to fix. so i didnt do it. now that acura officially acknowledges the problem, the dealer offer to split the price with me, so i'll pay about 100 bucks.

Are you over the EXTENDED warranty period for this part (160K km / 120K miles?)?? If you're under that limit, then you should pay NOTHING, and your dealer is ripping you off otherwise.

yes i am over the extended, at 158K miles. here's the thing. my lights went out 2 years ago when i was under 100k at about 80k miles. and they tried charging me over 1000 to fix because they didnt officially acknowledge the problem. now 2 years later that release a TSB? yet will only cover it 50/50 with me. does that make any sense at all? i should get full coverage and the TSB should be retrospective.

Should almost certainly be covered. Do you have a printed estimate from when you originally brought it in for that problem and were quoted $1500? If so, call up Acura Customer Relations (their number is in the main forum in the FAQ I believe). Tell them this should be covered, and get them to contact the dealership and straighten this out.

I know that people who had paid for the repair DO get reimbursed via this TSB, so this shouldn't be any different.

i never got it fixed when they tried charging me that price. so acura doesnt owe me anything. but now that the TSB was released they are still only covering me 50/50 because of my high mileage. even though when the defect occurred i was at the correct mileage of about 80k. because they didnt release the TSB till 2 years later i am now at 158k miles. what do they expect me to do, go back in time or something? i mean they released a TSB 3 years after there was a problem. so how will they not cover me in full for this?

As I asked before - did you even get a paper estimate for that work you chose to decline 3 years ago? If so, dig it up or have them pull it from their database, and send it in to Acura Customer Relations.

If you can't find it have the dealership you took the car to look it up for you on their computer. They always have a record of when you take the care in for anything. BTW I drive an 04 and luckily haven't experienced this problem with my car, but I have had other issues

so wait, my lights went out something like a year ago. And the stealership was trying to charge me something like $1,500 also. They said they had to replace the whole radio unit. At the time I was over my warranty mileage. Now I'm at around 68,000 miles. What is this TSB you guys are talking about? Is it a recall? And to give you guys some advise there is a recall on the left taillight, the wire harness needs to be replaced. But back to the console, please tell me that this TSB thingy is going to save me, cause I lost all center console lights and A/C!!!

The TSB will 99.99% likely cover your replacement part and all labour for the centre console lights. Bring it to the dealer, mention the TSB, and they should order the part right the and there after verifying the lights are indeed out.

Good news - got the car fixed under warranty. Had to take the car in 3 times. The first was to verify the problem. During the second visit the dealership discovered that the PCB board that was sent to them was broken when they took it out of the box. On the 3rd try the dealership ended up installing a complete new radio as it was sent to them by Acura Canada for the problem with the first board. Worth it it the end I guess.
Anyway happy to have the lights back adn glad it was covered as it should be. Now if Acura covers the A/C problem its off to look at a new MDX.

Hmm....someone correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Acura extend the warranty on this part, so phonfreak's car should be covered, right?

Phonefreak, I'd fight them on this. I believe the warranty was extended, but if not, try to get them to do a goodwill fix for you. Call Acura's customer service number and get a case started.
