Low miles per gallon

For some reason I'm only averaging 20.7 miles per gallon on my 06 TSX that I just bought about a month ago. The car has 690 miles on it and it's a 6 speed with Navi. I drive mostly on the freeways and rarely experience traffic jams. If you look at this guy's chart from the link below he's averaging a lot more. Anyone have any ideas why this is happening or how I can improve it?

You'll get better milage as you get closer to 10,000 miles. By the 5th or 6th tank you should be getting an average of mid 20s at worst.

It also has a lot to do with your style of driving. TSX is not really made to be driven like a grandma's car. It's very rev-happy and this could get your gas-milage out of hand!

I agree that the car is too new. The engine break-in period that will lead to better fuel mileage will continue to get better over several thousand miles. Some cars--don't recall which ones, but I've heard about fuel reports on Motorweek TV show--continue breaking in after more than a year of driving, such as 10,000 to 20,000 miles.

Mine is an '05 with 35,000 kilometers, roughly 27,000 miles.

On the highway, with a K&N air filter, I am lucky to get 23.8 MPG on a flat road with the wind pushing from behind.

I generally average 21 - 22.

My mpg's has been going up ever since I got the car, and slowly. After 8+ months and nearly 14k miles, I'm up around 26.5mpg with mixed, fairly aggressive driving. I didn't start topping over 24ish until about 8k, that was when I remember thinking that my mileage had 'settled in'.

when i got my car my mileage was pretty bad also, i got around 270 my first tank and my last tank i got 320. It will improve over time. Depends on how you broke in your car also. I broke mine semi hard.

When I drive 90% local and 10% highway (I work locally), I get around 17-19 mpg.
When I drive 100% highway (415 mile trip back to my parent's place from socal to norcal), I just got 33.5 mpg. This is according to actual calculations, not the MID. The MID tends to overestimate by anywhere from 0.5-1.5 mpg.

However, mine is 5AT.

Driving style makes all the difference in MPG. I just broke the 2,000 mile mark, and according to my log, am averaging over 25 MPG. This number would be higher, but I have been having fun with VTEC, Hondata reflash, and K&N Typhoon. Try accelerating slow and smooth, shifting around 3k RPM. When on the freeway, cruise in 6th whenever possible, and avoid driving too fast. Although the TSX is fairly aerodynamic, there is no stopping of wind resistance. The faster you go, the more energy (fuel) you'll need to overcome it. Try staying consistant with a more conservative driving style on your next tank of gas and report back.

Off the lot with 1 mile on my 06 navi got 20-21 in the city and 33 on the highway. Did a 300 mile roadtrip and got 32 on the way up and and amazing 36 mpg with a tail wind on the way back I was in shock (75mph). Did the fill up and the numbers matched the MID. This car never ceases to amaze me....

I am still averaging 15-16 mpg at 10,000 miles. My car is a Certified PreOwned 2005. I took it to the dealer last time and they blamed it on my intake. Does anyone know what can be causing this? I do not drive aggressively.

intake can steal your mpg, thats why im not sure if i want one. Check your tire pressure...

also things u want to do is coast when u see red lights or stop sign...that helps a ton

My tire pressure is always at the recommended level. The intake shouldn't have a big effect on the mpg. I've seen people with 20s with an intake. =[

raise it up to 35, it helps even out the tire wear. Last tank i average 27mpg mixed with default tire pressure. I upped it to 35 all around this tank, so far im at 160 miles with 1/4 inch before the needle hits half way. just passed 3000 miles today

You need to tell me your secrets! OP, I'm getting the same 20.7mpg as you but my 6-speed is only 6 days old. Over time it will get better.

Yeah but I shouldn't be getting 15 even with default tire pressure.

I really hate to bump this but I've had this problem for 3 months. If I was averaging 20s mpg I would be saving a lot more money on gas but this is insane. My dad's minivan goes 13 mpg so my car saves only a little bit more gas than his. What parts might have gone wrong with the car that might cause be to lose so much gas? Can someone please help me?

An air intake can decrease MPG, but not that much. I've been getting avg 30mpg with a CAI. What you could do is put back the stock intake and see what happens. If it still runs low mpg, take it to the dealer since you're well under the warrantee period.

Also, check out was ck123 suggested.

Thanks for the suggestions. Should I go about replacing it to check if it's working properly or should I just take it out to see if it's really dirty =].

Is the car driven stop light to stop light, or does your driving contain a mix of hwy/cty? If it was 100% city in NYC with a lot of stop and go I could see it being quite low. The fact that your Dad get's 13 in a minivan indicates the driving conditions are probably contributing significantly. My Dad's minivan gets low to mid 20's.

My V8 4x4 truck gets 15-16 which I consider quite low, but it gets about 60% hwy.

And I don't think the intake will change MPG up or down by more than a few percent. This was true of both my truck and TSX. Nor will tire pressure unless it's really low.

Not sure if it will help much but my dad drives an Chevy Astro Minivan from 1992. I'm sure there are people in NYC that drives a TSX and gets much better MPG than I do. I really do not think it has to do with my driving honestly.

I now have 1,000 miles on my 06 auto TSX and it seems like I am still not getting as good of mileage as I might hope. I do about 80% of my driving on freeways and am only averaging around 23 mpg.

1. There seems to be so many conflicting reports from others on when mileage goes up after break-in. If break in is considered the first 1,500 miles or so, shouldn’t it go up after that?

2. Does the way that you drive during break-in really affect mpg that much in the future? I have been driving very grandma like, though I do accelerate on the freeway to as high as 80mph. I would just think that unless you really drive it hard during break-in, all of these cars should average around the same mpg after the break-in, though it seems that everyone reports different amounts of mpg? Just seems weird because we are not driving race cars, we are driving cars that are readily available to the mainstream population who may not have advanced knowledge in breaking in an engine (like me), and I just find it difficult to imagine that Acura would sell these cars requiring strict adherence to the the break-in to get good mpg. The Acura people did not even mention anything to me about break-in.

Thanks.

If your car is new, gas mileage usually goes up after 7500 to 10000 miles when the engine is loosen up a bit. Other factors will affect your result like long warm up time, incorrect tire pressure, defective O2 sensor, dirty air filter, dirty oil, dirty/worn spark plugs, incorrect valve adjustments, incorrect parking brake adjustment, cheap gas, clogged cat converter, dirty fuel injectors, heavy aftermarket wheels/tires, city driving, driving style. Etc.

I take the amount of miles the car has driven since the last fill up and divide that by the gallons of gas I put in.

OK, there is something seriously wrong with your car. I would have thought it impossible to get mileage like that in a TSX.

Your dealer is an asshole and is using your intake mod as an excuse for not getting to the bottom of this. I have the CT Icebox and my mileage is no lower than before the mod. I haven't seen Injen owners complaining about mileage in the low teens either.

I've got to believe that something is going on with the tuning of your car. Maybe the air/fuel sensor is bad, or ECU is doing something screwy. So you haven't gotten a CEL (Check Engine Light)? IMHO if you were racing from stoplight to stoplight in the city, your mileage shouldn't be that low, maybe 15 or 16 mpg but not lower. Is there another dealer nearby you can go to?

Agreed. I put an Injen CAI in a month ago and my mileage has not really changed much (the only decrease I attribute to leadfood factor just because I love flooring it for the rumble!)

Maybe someone is stealing/siphoning gasoline from you?? Something definitely is up; you shouldn't be getting such poor mileage even when not broken in. My very first fillup in my new '06 TSX I averaged 29mpg; the second I got a little over 30mpg.

My '04 was similar in results as well...

I have an 06 TSX with 6K and I average about 23 with city/Hwy, so I would not worry that anything is wrong. Put some miles on the car and make sure you are not using ANY gas with 10% EThenol. That stuff is like water. Try some BP or Texaco. I have gotton 33 on the HWY. Are you using Shell gas?

You have something wrong with you car. There is no way a 4 banger gets that kind of mileage. In fact is should not be hard to find with MPG that low.
