Locked in Park!

Hi Guys,

So here's what happened -- I reversed into my parking spot this morning at work. I put it in to park and open the door to check if the guy beside me parked in crooked or was it me (it was the guy beside me) meanwhile the car is still running. I decide to move it back it bit more but when I go to shift the car from park to reverse it won't move. It moves only the amount that it would typically move when the brake is not pressed.
I've tried a few things
- turn off the car, turn it back on
- make sure that i've got the brake pressed in
- move the steering wheel around

I'm out of ideas -- any thoughts??

Thanks!

Check your owner's manual. There's a procedure for manually overriding the Park interlock that involves removing a cover near the shifter and inserting a screwdriver. That will temporarily get you out of park but you'll have to keep doing this until you get the car looked at.

Thanks Stevestr!
That saved me the cost of towing..
I think it may be linked to a switch or fuse. I noticed that the VSA light was off and also the brake lights weren't functioning. It's at the dealership right now, see what they say. Any idea how much a fuse will cost?

Probably not a fuse, probably the switch on the brake petal that tells the car when its being pressed. That would cause the park interlock to not function as well as the brake lights.

What would be the procedure to fix this? Replace the switch? Could you tell me where I can find the switch in the car?
Thanks!

It was the brake switch -- the part is about $10 and its fairly easy to replace. I had the dealer replace it after convincing them that it was infact the brake switch and it's a 5 minute job.
