Help with oil level please!!!!

Hi, I've serached and searched but I can't quite find what I'm looking for. I just did an oil change today and I've filled it with 4.4Litres of oil. After that I started the engine to let it run for about 1 min then I shut it off. I checked the dipstick, it was dry. So I tired it again and it was dry again. So I've filled about another 1/2 Litre of oil and now it's right at between the "LOW" and "HIGH" mark. Has anyone experienced this before? Should I fill more???

Thank you so much!!!

P.S. I've worked on Vtec B16s, B18s, B20s, and H22s and they all needed about 1/2 Litre more of oil to be filled right on the "HIGH" dot. I've already did that and I'm still at only 1/2 way. wtf???
Damn these K series!!!

According to the manual 4.8 qts of oil is required. It states that if the oil level is not at the mark to add as necessary. Until the oil level is up to the upper mark on the dipstick. So if you used 4.4 and had to add 1/2 litre more it sounds like youre w/ in specs. Most techs say theyre using about 5.0qts when doing an lof on TSX's. I guess all im saying is dont worry no need to stress on that. Its all good.

NOTE: Im not sure if youre doing this but you should be running the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature before doing your oil change. Just though id mention this. Could have something to do w/ your concern. oil will normally expand under heat if Im not mistaken.

I'm just guessing, but it could be that the oil circuit is longer than on B-series, and the oil filter larger, making that it needs more oil to fill up.

Anyways, if you sealed everything back up right, just follow what the dipstick says and you'll be fine.

Did you take into account the oil that the filter holds?

Yes and usually when the owner's manual tells you that it needs 4.2Litres, that usually means oil filter is filled as well (That is why people start their engines and let it run for a min or two so oil could get into the filter). Unless the dude that wrote the TSX manual was on some MAJOR crack?!??!

If you check the dip stick right after shutting down the engine, then the oil level can be lower than expected. It takes time for all the oil from the cylinder head to drain back to the oil pan.

Check the oil level after it sat overnight. Add whatever it takes to get it between the two marks and only worry if it drops below the LOW mark within 2-3000 miles.

All I can say is mistakes can happen and insert themselves in the instruction manual.

Does this apply to K series only? Cause it wasn't like that for ALL the other Honda engine's I've worked with.

It's not really any engine specific. It's just the way how most engines are designed. When you start the engine, the oil pump picks up the oil from the pan and send it through the oil filter, then to the rest of the engine via various passages to lube all vital moving parts. Just imagine what happens to the oil when you turn the engine off. Oil will eventually drain back to the oil pan from the cylinder head, off the rockers, etc. Also, depends on the type of oil filters and the anti-drain back valve is used. The filter may or may not contain any oil after sitting around for awhile, as oil can also drain out from it.

Unfortunately, it was the Honda filter that has poor anti-drain back valve design, at least the big batch of filters that I bought... Next time before you change the oil, let the car sit overnight. Then remove the filter the next day and see if there's any oil left.

I've also just done an oil change on my friend's RSX-S and it also needed about 5.2L of oil (exactly 1L over what the maunal saids) but this time I've used an OEM oil filter instead of a Mobil 1 since I ran out.

4000 miles now. No oil changes done yet.
oil level this morning was right btw the hi-lo marks.
I don't recall what the level was upon delivery.
Does it do any good (or harm) to add oil to like 3/4 way btween the marks ?

I don't think it hurts or helps. If you want to add a 1/4 quart for piece of mind then feel free.

I did my oil change and I added 5.5qts of Mobil 1 to get it close to the top hash mark. Also, this car seems to burn oil as I've been adding a quart roughly every month.

i hope you're slightly exagerating. it does burn oil, but that's more than any I've seen. I added about half a quart in 7 months.

Cost me $4 to replace the oil at the nearby dealership, today.

Nevermind the labor charge.

Perhaps a bit, but I add way more often than 7 months. I remember seeing other users here complaining about having to add 1 qt every month. Also, I don't think I have any leaks since there are no spots wherever I park.
