Question Hard Shift with AT in Manual Mode

I've searched for answers but couldn't come up with any. When in manual mode in my 2006 AT, 1st to 2nd is usually pretty rough both when the engine is cold and warm. Anyone know what could be wrong or past issues that have been discussed about this? Thanks.

Could you define "rough"?

When switching between any other gears, it's a smooth, quick transition. When going from 1st to 2nd, it's almost like it stops and then shifts. Not fluid at all.

Knox, I've noticed the same thing with my '06 as well, it seems like no matter at what RPM I'm switching from 1st to 2nd in SS mode, the car seems to jerk a bit, anything past 2nd gear is smooth shifting.

I recall my 2004 5AT shifting smoothly from 1st to 2nd, but then I almost always shifted around 7200 rpms or so =)

Same with my 04. 1st to 2nd is always rougher and longer than the every other shift.

I've made an appointment with the dealer to get it checked out. I've been changing gears around 3K RPM since I'm still in break-in mode. Can't hurt to get it looked at.

I've never noticed this on mine. I'll pay particular attention next time I take it out.

LOL, I haven't driven my since I posted that but, if it was noticable, I would have noticed before. Leaving on a roadtrip tomorrow, I'll let you know when I get back.

Oh, and dom....

Actually, I paid more attention to it while driving last night. I noticed that the switch from 1st to 2nd can only be felt when accelerating in a straight line. It's pretty unnoticable if you switch while turning...

I noticed that too. I tried shifting under acceleration and with my foot off of the gas and it was not noticeable with the latter. Hmm..

I don't see all the concern. If any of you auto owners out there came from or also own a manual transmission car, you'll realize that in a manual transmission equipped car the hardest shifts for the driver to perfect are neutral-to-1 and 1-to-2. Considering that, isn't it possible that that's why the automatic's 1-to-2 shifts are a bit more harsh? Sure an automatic might be able to make it a bit more smoother than a manual transmission, but I don't think it can be perfectly silky smooth and still give you the quick shifts you want from the SS mode.

Perhaps if you could feel or witness the act we're discussing, you'd have a better understanding. It just doesn't feel normal to me. It literally jerks your head back in my AT TSX. The rest of the gears are silky smooth.

I have noticed the lag between 1-2 shift in the AT. I am taking the car to dealer so I will ask them to take a look at it.

Same here. I'm going on Friday. I'll report what they say then.

you have to find the "sweet point" in the rpm to avoid this.

I've use my SS mode like...only 10 times? but during the first 7 times, 1st n 2nd is rough. Put it in AT and let the ECU hsow you where to shift best....i have no problem with the roughness right now...

7300 rpm was my sweet point =)

Yeah, it's kinda rough in an MT too, but I just thought I needed more practice...

The delay between gears seemed a little longer than between the higher gears ( or was it my imagination? ) but that was about it. Maybe it just needs break in?

Hmm, mine is somewhat delayed but once it catches it's quite a jolt. As I said, that's shifting between 2500 - 3500 RPM. It may be that it's not broken in but I'll drop it by the dealer on Friday just for safe measure. I've got a 700+ mile trip coming up on Saturday and would hate to be out a TSX tranny during that trip.

I just experience the lag time, I did not know you meant an actual jolt. Mine has 40k, so I guess the lag time is on all the TSX AT.

I dont thing anything is wrong with your tranny. It will be fine. I dont feel anything when I shift. Maybe you should try to shift at 4k rpm. I use the SS mode a lot and I dont notice anything from 1st to 2nd. It feels the same throughout the whole gear shift for me. Maybe its just me or my car?

Ouch... Okay, that is a bit strange. My apologies if I came off a bit harsh in my last post. I thought it was a more subtle difference you were noticing.

I agree, the shift from 1-2 in a manual is always the roughest. I have an 06 5AT as well and do notice that in SS, the 1-2 is rougher than the rest but I think that is just the way it is. Now, I'm not sure how rough yours is Knox, but if it is moderately harsher than the others, I wouldn't worry about it. All the same though, I'd be curious to see what your dealer has to say about it.

I'm taking it in at 7:30AM in the morning so we'll see.

The dealer said it was nothing more than normal break-in. I guess I'll just bear with it.

Glad to hear that fellow ASMer. I tested out my 1-2 shifting in SS again today and I have to say that it is only a bit rougher than shifting in other gears. I'm still at about 400 kms or 250 miles so I'm not sure if the rough shift is a break in issue. I guess only time will tell though.

The loaner I drove had 6K miles on it and it was an 05 and it was perfect when shifting in both types of transmission options. I'm convinced that this is just a break-in, wear-in kind of deal. I'll keep you posted.
