check emissions light

hi, friday my display was saying "tighten gas cap" even though the gas cap was plenty tight. saturday, the display told me "check emissions system" and gave me a engine light. I am about to travel (non-car) and when i get back will be in a situation where i need to drive the car to work (40 miles) and likely back ...possibly for a couple days.....without the time to take the car to a garage. any thoughts on whether this error message is likely to be something i can safely work through or whether i am in dire danger????

If there's an AutoZone or similar auto parts store in your area, go borrow their OBD2 scan tool and check the code to determine what the problem is.

I recently had the "Check Emission System" message too. Just like JTso suggested, I checked the code at a local Autozone and narrowed it down to the Primary o2 sensor. I took it to the dealer, and they replaced it under warranty. I was surprised the o2 sensor went bad, considering I had just under 30,000 miles. I was even more surprised the dealer fixed it under warranty even though my car had intake, headers, and exhaust. I assume you should be safe for a short while, but should get it checked out as soon as you can. I drove at least a couple hundred miles before the repair.

Good luck!

I have 2006 acura Rl and I had check emission light go off, after I went to autozone they checked the source and it end up that my knock sensor failed. After taking the car to japanese auto shop they told me it will cost me 400 bucks to change the sensor so i went to guy whom i know, he has private shop. After checking my car he said that the knock sensor is working fine it's just the mouse has chewed some of the wiring in the car. That seems to be the common problem in these cars. So it cost me few bucks to change the wiring and everything was working perfect again. So my advise if you have any sensor that failed too early ask the your shop to check the wiring first. hope this helps.
