2nd gear grinding and.....

I thought I was just getting old and couldn't shift anymore but HAve come to realize that there might be a bigger problem here. I grind 2nd when under heavy acceleration. At first I thought b/c I was trying to shift so fast I was leting the clutch out too early, but after further testing/investigating I still know how to drive and am doing everything correctly. I can tell there is some resistance even when shifting slow from 1 to 2. Anyone else noticed this?
On another note I have warped rotors once again! This will be the 2nd time I have taken the car in for this. All they do is true the rotors on a grinding block. I would think this does nothing but make the disk thinner therefore more suseptable to warping.
Oh well
Happy Holidays
Todd

Have the same problem on a brand new 05 when car is cold. I have to shift very slowly from 1st to 2nd to avoid grinding. But after the car warms up, I can shift as fast as I want and no grinding.

I've always swapped out the stock tranny fluids for RedLine synthetics. Makes a WORLD of difference in the cold. Just make sure you match the viscosity and spec of exactly what is required. (i.e. if the manual calls for a GL-4 rated 75w90 then get exactly that and NOT a GL-5)

About your "warped" rotors, it would be a good thing that you on how to break them in, and you might save yourself a fair amount of hassle if properly broke in.

I broke the car in per the book 19 months ago when I bought the car. So I am sure that isn't the problem. I think we all know the brakes on the TSX are too small for the car.
This will be the first thing I upgrade if and when I do some mods....

Ciao

you know i did that to my 93 honda civic i used redline MTL Manuel Transmission Lubercant. it looks a lot like auto trans fluid. anmyway after about 30K miles my bearings went in the trans and i had to have the tranny rebuilt because of a noise it started making. i dont know if i would trust that in the TSX

That sucks. But I must say I've never had a failure with Redline in any manual tranny / differential or transfer case in 15 years across 9 or ten different cars and trucks(jap, american, german). And a few friends have logged about as much use as me with never a failure which is remarkable in itself. But it is very important to make sure you're using the exact type that your vehicle needs. A common problem is GL-5 spec fluid in a tranny calling for GL-4. Kiss those syncros goodbye....

I have seen reports on how Redline MTL ruins Honda tranny. It appears this good lub is not quite compatible with Hondas and many people have switched back to Honda MTL (myself included).

well i wouldnt exactly call it a failure. at first i heard this noise it sounded a little like a rattle. but it just didnt seem right. after having a tranny expert listen to it he positivly identified it as bearings.
it made a sound most people probly wouldnt notice, i dont know if i had let it go how long it would have taken to totally destroy the bearings. i did get a change to see them and the races were pitted.
the car had about 90K on it when this happend, that is a lot of miles but for the bearings to go on a tranny seems a little too remote to call it normal wear. the only thing i could come up with for a cause was the MTL, that stuff says right on the bottle its for motorcycle transmissions.

I think there might be a potential problem with the 6MT... I have experienced the similar grind but I originally thought it was caused by the short shifter that I've installed, throwing the synchronization off during shifting. I've been driving MT for years and personally don't think that I've messed up on the simple 1-2 shifting. It doesn't happen all the time or in any other gears.

Problem

We should get a poll going to see what kind of numbers we got on this. If the majority of the people w/6MT's has this happen thenn there is a problem.

BullSh!t. They won't cover a bad 5th gear synchro? Absolute BS. It's not like someone would be slamming 5th.....

Go down to a good hardware store and pick up a bunch of small Grade-8 fasteners like tiny nuts and some machine bolts. Loose ball and roller bearings are the best if you have a good source. Dump a few of them into the tranny fill hole along with a few long squirts of engine de-greaser or brake cleaner.

Stay on back roads, keep a cell phone handy and get ready to clutch in fast....

Now there's a great way to make sure it won't be covered under warranty. I'd love to show that to our Honda rep after I'd torn down the trans. Instant customer pay only.

Also, the proper MT lubricant is Honda MTF. 5W-30 engine oil will work, but using GL4 or GL5 gear oil will make it even harder to shift and will eventually destroy the transmission.

'92-2000 Civics are notorious for having the mainshaft bearing get noisy. As long as the oil you used in the trans was the proper viscosity, I doubt it caused your bearing failure. I think by design that bearing doesn't get enough oil splash.

well thats good to know but i still dont know if i feel comfortable putting MTL from redline in my trans.

to be honest i didnt really notice any better shifting in my civic when i tried it.

I agree with you there. Best to stick with what Honda/Acura recommends.

BTW, I was in Dillon, Co a few months ago. What a really NICE place. The lake was so beautiful!!!!

I'm going to bump this up because mine is grinding into third gear if I shift above 4k. It used to be occasionally but the past couple of days, it grinds every time. I can feel it in the stick, and hear it, and even if I take my time shifting, it still does it.

But why are people saying that synchros aren't covered under warranty??? How can they prove it was caused by abuse? I don't abuse the car, in fact, because of this problem, I rarely shift above 5k.

If it's not covered under warranty, I am gonna be one pissed off SOB. I'm taking it in sometime next month as I have no time this week or next.
