2004 TSX Noise--Help, what is it?
I purchased my 2004 TSX new and still have it with 120k plus miles. Since buying the car new, it has always made some sort of sound that is hard to describe coming from under the hood a few seconds after starting to drive. It is a hard noise to describe, but it is only a second or so long and has been the norm since I have owned the car. Recently, the sound has started to change. It is still very brief and happens every time I start the car and begin to drive. It sound more like a dry sound or almost a grinding noise. Yes, I am a female as you have probably already determined by my descriptions of this sound. If anyone can clue me in on what makes the normal sound and what could be going wrong now that it is starting to sound abnormal, I would REALLY appreciate it. Thanks for any help you may have!

Since it's very hard to describe, could you possibly grab a video of it? you can upload it to youtube and post the link here.
what part of texas? I'm In houston and the cold weather is doing strange things 'round these parts. could possibly making the sound, weirder than when it was new?

good idea!
Great idea! I will record it and link it. I am in Austin and it definitely has been cold. I am fairly certain is has been progressively changing even before the cold started. We will be back in upper 60s -70s this weekend and will see that makes a difference. Thanks!

I have a 2006 TL and there's a noise on start up, which we believe to be the fuel pump priming. it's present in all TL's. I've never started up a TSX before, but maybe the fuel pump is on its way out? i'm not to sure and just guessing until I can hear the noise.
also, when I changed the starter with a refurbished unit, it no longer sounded like a "honda" starter any more. but that wouldnt be the case for you, since you didnt change anything

Hard to tell from the video. After listening several times the sound appears to me similar to a venting pressure relief sound I get from my 03 Acura MDX. It has always made this sound and I suspect is an Accumulator venting pressure but don't know. It only makes the sound on a cold start.
good luck

Texastsx04, does the sound only occur once per drive cycle, meaning you hear it on take off like in your video and then not at all until next time you start it and drive it? If so, it may just be the ABS self test, or as texasHonda said, possibly a pressure relief valve.
