'04 Starter Defects

So my '04 6MT will be losing its warranty at the end of this month. I took it in because it wasn't starting, figure that it's possibly the colder weather here in LA. Occasionally it would take me 4 or 5 times, completely depressing the clutch, to get the vehicle to turn over.

After taking it in the dealer stated that my Starter was bad. I laughed in amusement as the Starter was replaced earlier this year. I stated that I hoped this wouldn't happen again as my car would be out of warranty after December '07. My Service Technician stated that since I now have a paper trail of this happening that it shouldn't be a problem showing American Honda that this is a recurring issue IF it were to happen outside of the warranty coverage parameters.

Has anyone else experienced this as well? I'm on the fence because I don't want to deal with a car, and I LOVE Acuras, that will deteriorate rapidly.

Does it turn over but not start or just not do anything at all?

If it's the latter I'd suggest taking a look at the interlock switch on the clutch pedal. There are two of them, one that is depressed when the clutch is all the way up (for the cruise control) and another when it's all the way down. The one when it's all the way down is the one to look at. It may just need to be adjusted.

PACman: The batt was replaced about 2 months ago. The dealer ran all the electrical points and found that the Starter was bad.

LukeaTron: That's exactly what I thought every time this would happen, but evidently the dealer said no. I did not know whether or not this was a recurring theme amongst '04 TSX models. I can't believe they would have to replace a starter that wasn't even 1 year old......

So did it crank or it did nothing when you would try to start it?

Did the dealer use a rebuilt starter or a brand new one for the last replacement.

The starter isn't made by Honda/Acura so don't blame the car. In any case it could just be bad luck, it happens, hopefully it won't happen again.

Good Luck!

Yea I know the starter is another manufacturer, I was just amazed that each instance happened within a matter of months of one another.

The car didn't even crank. Clutch fully depressed, key all the way to its stop.......nothing. All is well now, but I'm taking it back in for a vibration I have in the dash that I would like to have quieted.

Thanks fellas!

My starter also died this weekend. Battery has full charge, lights and radio work, but the engine will not turn/crank. Car worked great before I brought it in for a type D service on Thursday, then on Friday the starter died. Don't know if it has to do with the fact that they shampood engine and damaged the starter/alternator. Still waiting to get my car back from the dealer.

I'd say it's a very highly likely that who ever was doing the engine "shampooing" fooked up something electrical for you. It's always risky cleaning the engine bay with water.

And just in case there's some one out there who might not know better, NEVER USE HIGH PRESSURE WATER IN YOUR ENGINE BAY.

The dealer will be replacing the starter/solenoid, however they are using a rebuilt part. Any advise as to how reliable a rebuilt part is?

Clutch interlock issues

I've also experienced an intermittant issue with the clutch interlock - the car will not start (no crank - nothing) with clutch fully depressed. Took it in a few months and the dealer could not duplicate. I've got around 64k now. Problem first started happening around 58k
Lately the problem has increased in frequency and can often take many attempts to get the engine to start. My latest approach is to hold the key in the start position and slowly pump the clutch until the engine cranks. This is getting to be a royal PITA!

Who else has experienced this issue? Any resolution?

Thanks
