Thinking of a new DIY Intake project...

What I'm thinking:
I'm debating about modifying the comptech icebox lid to accept a cone filter instead of a panel it comes with. I already have the resonator out with the airhorn down to the resonator cavity. Anyone out there have an opinion on potential improvements over a panel type filter this would gain?

Why I would do something like this:
I'm currently not even using the icebox lid, but want to put it back on. Why, you ask, am I not using it? I was in rare form one day when I decided I should take out my filter to inspect how dirty it was. Take the lid off and come face to face with a filter with a solid layer of dirt covering 75 percent of the filter.(running with a vented fog light cover makes for a lot of dirt intake) I tap it on the ground a few times to knock the dirt off and, pop, the wire mesh on the back side of the foam filter comes out and bends all out of shape. In this state, I wasn't going to put the filter back in but I did have my k&n drop-in in the trunk so i tossed that in..unfortunately it didn't sound like it was making a good seal with the comptech box. The comptech filter has a thick rigid plastic surround on the foam filter while the k&n has a thin rubber seal. So i put the stock lid back on with the k&n. The comptech lid is currently sitting in my tunk!

My inspirtation:

An image I came across depicting a cone in a stock tsx box as well as the fact that the stock RSX-S and S2k boxes are cones in an air box.

Anyone have any comments? Am I just wasting my time? haha.

don't want all the extra noise! Plus I only need to buy a 30 dollar cone filter as opposed to a 200 dollar intake set.

Sounds like a pretty simple project. Just remember to measure twice and cut once.

I don't think the cone filter really does much of anything for performance.

It's probably nothing noticeable, I just can't see spending 50 bucks on a replacement comptech panel filter when I can do it myself for cheaper.

Also, the rsx-s, s2k and nsx all have a cone in box type filter, I have a feeling there are some improvements to be had even if they aren't significant.

The cone filter would have more surface area vs the panel. May not get as dirty as quickly as the panel filter.

Why don't you just buy the whole Comptech setup, and use K&N filter cleaner kit to clean your Comptech filter? It should not be a problem.

I mentioned it briefly in my post, i do have the comptech setup, but my comptech filter is fuxored. Tapped it on the ground to knock some loose dirt off and the wire mesh popped out of place and shape. I'm not going to use it like that and unfortunately the k&n doesn't seem like it's sealing right with the box.

Do you feel good gains from the Icebox itself?
