Talking short shifter

I finally got the privilege to drive American Muscle Mustang Cobra - 5spd. The car was equipped with a short shifter. I was wondering, if any one of you guys have driven one and how would you compare the Comptech's short shifter for TSX????

I really liked the short shifter...perfect short throws and very smooth. Only problem I had was the heavy duty clutch.

Is comptech's short shifter a must have????

I wouldn't say its a must have, but it certainly reduces the throw.

If you're referring to his sig, he HAD a 5AT, and traded it in for a 6MT.

I have the Comptech SS and also the metah shift housing bushings. Both were great improvements over stock. The bushings make a difference and are noticeable. The short shifter definitely shortens the throws (36% I think it said?), and makes driving the car even more fun, BUT, it does take a bit of the buttery-smoothness of the shifter away. You occasionally (sometimes, maybe 25-25% of the time) get a bit of notchiness, but definitely it's a net positive to have the short shifter.

The only time I really get any notchiness is when the car is COLD (ie: winter here in Ottawa) and the tranny fluid hasn't warmed up yet, or, on cool mornings but only on the 1-2 shift (which has never been smooth as silk to start with).

Cheers.

Do you still have your TSX? Thought you were selling yours.

Back to the point of the thread.
I have the SS, housing bushings, and cable bushings. I love it all.

Yeah, we've got a few inches of ice with snow under and on top. I'm enjoying the insides and working from home.

1. Housing Bushings and Cable Bushings

Anything else I need to buy??

One more question: Installing SS, does it impact on Reverse Gear???

Other than making the shift shorter to reverse, no issues at all.

Do a few searches on Shifter Bushings, but http://www.speed-source.net/

I for one did not like the shifter cable bushings at all. Get the SS and shifter base bushings from the link above and you'll be golden. If you really want more, you can add the shifter cable ones later since the SS and base bushings should really be done together

The short-shifter improves shifting performance by a lot. When I had it installed it was great. When I had it taken out it sucked. I had it taken out, though, because it apparently was the cause of my shifter assembly breaking. The Acura tech told me it was the cause of the breakage, and, as much as it sucks having the stock shift throw back, I'd prefer not to spend another $500 to have it fixed again.

Is it really the SSK cause the assembles to break or just an excuse from Acura? I dun think just shorten the shift stick will cause the assembles to break!

I agree. Lengthening the lever action at the bottom of the shift stick doesn't break any part of the shifter base assembly. The only thing that could break it is over torquing the base or doing something during the install to break it.

I'll probably never know for sure if it really caused it to break, but if it was in fact the cause I'd look and feel really stupid having it fixed again. Then a $50 mod turns into a $1050 mod. I had driven about 50,000 miles with the short-shifter before it broke. I still have the piece if I ever do decide to re-install it.
