Installed my Metal Bushings today
Finally got my car back (for a day) so I installed my metal bushings. Easy install considering I've done my short shifter before. Less than 30 min., much longer for anyone who hasn't done it.
Nothing fancy, they do make the shift a lot cleaner so that it stops dead when you get into gear. I don't know if its better, but you can feel the difference, I'm undecided whether they all useful. It'll take me a while to get used to it, I'm a pretty finicky shifter, I hated my short shifter when I first got it, but can't live w/o it now.
You can buy them from kurt_bradley's friend, e-mail him at jdkindle@yahoo.com.
Instructions for installing metal bushings (pretty much the same as installing a short shifter).
Tools needed:
Needle nose pliers
3/8" Ratchet
3/8" extension
12mm socket
14mm wrench
12mm wrench
Flat head screwdriver with taped head (optional)
Philips head screwdriver
Steps
1) Unscrew shift knob by holding 14mm nut with a wrench and turning knob. Remove both knob and nut.
2) Pull console cover out by gripping the shifter boot and pulling up, working your way from front to back. Make sure not to bend the cover, as it takes a great deal of force to remove it. <i>Optionally you can stick a flat head screwdriver under the cover near the back of the e-brake to pry up the cover working from back to front.
3) Unhook the 2 seat heater plugs from the cover by pressing the tab in and pulling
4) Remove the rubber bottom in the center armrest to reveal 2 screws and remove them. The bottom is difficult to grip, you may try to slip the flat head screwdriver under a side to pull it up.
5) Remove the 2 screws attaching the "not an ashtray" to the center console
6) Remove the 2 screws attaching the center console to the front. You may not be able to see them, but they are right underneath the "not an ashtray." <i>Optionally you can remove the not an ashtray entirely by removing the pocket above it.
7) Remove the wires attach to the center console pulling it out. Detach e-brake clip as well.
8) Remove the lighter connection by pressing the tab on the opposite side of the plug
9) Remove 2 screws attach the console to the metal bracket
10) Pull the front of the console up and out to detach it, pushing up the "not an ashtray" slightly. Then remove center console by angling it over the e-brake
11) Remove the bolts connecting shifter housing to floor (except upper right) with 12mm socket and ratchet with extension
12) Remove upper right bolt with 12mm wrench
13) Push 4 metal bushing out of the rubber bushings in the boltholes using needle nose pliers. <i>Optionally you can remove the entire shifter housing for easier access, but it is more time consuming.
14) Push 4 rubber bushings out of the hole with needle nose pliers
15) Place 4 metal bushings underneath the bolt holes with grooved side up
16) Place 4 metal bushings on top of bolt holes with grooved side down
17) Bolt the shifter housing and replace parts in opposite order to finish.

what top cover are you talking about? if it's the center console then you just have to pull really hard. i worked from front to back. i used my fingertips on the edge and pulled it up. it took about 5min of pulling upwards and once you get that off the back is much more fun!!!

I've got these bushings. I notice the shift knob vibrates in 1st, 2nd, and 5th above 3.5k rpm. Think this could be one or a combination of several:
1. In the process of the install, I knocked something out of alignment in the shifter mechanism. I don't think it's this as the shifter goes into gear without any issue.
2. Vibrations are transmitting from somewhere connected to the overall shifter mechanism. It has always vibrated but the stock rubber bushings mute this so I never felt it before. Metal bushings do not mute it.
3. It always vibrated and I never noticed it. Now that I have gone in there and messed around with stuff, I'm paranoid that I messed something up, so it's really some sort of reverse placebo effect and nothing is wrong.
I'm guessing it's some combination of the 2nd and 3rd choices, but am wondering if anyone else has some insight into this?
Thanks.
