Attempting IceBox Install - Question

According to the CompTech instructions, the entire resonator and stock intake tube is removed. Is this true? I am having a heck of a time trying to get this thing out. All the bolts are removed but it's just not coming out. Am I not supposed to remove the entire intake system? Any insight appreciated. BTW, I do not have the entire front bumper removed and am attempting to go through fender well.

Thanks

from what i've read, you can remove the resonator by removing the tabs and peeling back the wheel well (front left tire off). the bumper removal is not necessary, although it's been said it makes everything a lot easier, particularly removing certain bolts.

here is a diy of an injen CAI install....there's a comment about removing the resonator and how it needed some pulling.

The resonator splits into two pieces. You'll have better luck getting it out if you remove the wheel.

Thanks. I did read that and followed the part where the bolts are removed but the instructions kind of stop short of instructing on the removal of the items. I just wanted to make sure that I do need to remove these items before I try to figure out the best way.

Thanks again...

The bitch bolt.....did you get the bolt that's accessible through the foglight hole in the fender? That's hidden from view, and can be missed sometimes.

Yes, I believe that I did get that bolt. It seems that the intake that ends near the radiator is what is keeping me from removing the entire assembly. I removed this "3rd" bolt according to the instructions but it is twisted like a "U" and I don't see how this is coming out...any advice?

I have it split into two pieces but it seems like it should split into three pieces. 1) the resonator box like thing that is closest to the bumper, 2) the oem intake pipe, and 3) the oem intake pipe extention that ends up near the radiator. Should I just get a little rougher with it?

Take the front bumper off. It's much easier if you do. But it is possible to remove it through the front left wheel well.

That's a good Q. I didn't have foglights on my 05, so it was as simple as removing the foglight placeholder.

RoodHawg - good stuff man.... when in doubt, just yank it out!

Yes it is. You need to go in from underneath and just be patient with it. You'll get it out eventually.

Actually, you might have better luck just undoing that bolt while the car is still stable on the ground. Then you can jack it up to remove the resonator.

i gotta install my icebox too...should i just remove the front bumper? I tried helping my friend on his 05 and it took 3 hours to just remove that one bolt...which we ended not removing that night.

I have an 06 so im kinda curious how the bumper removes in relationship to the 05..i would assume i just have to unplug the fog harness?

Fo my 06, I would definitely say that you should jack up the car and remove the front driver side wheel. I don't see how I would have gotten the oem air intake off and resonator otherwise. Also, I did end up going through the fog light cover to remove the bolt that you cannot see.

FYI...the CompTech instructions mention removing the "single bolt holding the factory air inlet to radiator support through the space in the chassis". This will be impossible unless you remove the bumper. I don't know if others that have installed IceBoxes without removing the bumper left this in place or what, but I had to remove the battery and battery cover to get to this bolt. Maybe I did it the hard way but I just couldn't find another way to do it.

I opted not to remove the front bumper and probably would have put all the stock stuff back on if I was required to because in my past experience, once you take something like that off that has a bunch of clips and punch holds, it's never really back on there the same again. Just my opinion. I will also tell you that this can be done in about 1.5 to 2 hours if you just stick with it and do it. Don't hesitate to email me if you want to hear about my gotcha's...

Good Luck!!!

p.s. IceBox sounds pretty good. Exactly what I was looking for as far as sound. And, you can really hear that the car is breathing. I most like that the car does not have what I call "that cheap sound" when you take off from a dead stop. And the little roar around 3000 rpm's and up is also nice but not too noticable.

Yeah, you did it the hard way. You can get to that bolt with a long extension and go "under" the battery tray from the intake airbox side. It's a straight shot.

I used a small ratcheting wrench and just stuck my hand up there. Probably took me a good 10 minutes to undo it, but it was worth it in the end.

FYI, the liner under the front bumper can by lowered by removing a couple of clips. I did that and could actually get a good look at the area from underneath. I was able then to reach up from under to use a ratchet to loosen the bolt while looking thought the hole vacated by the foglight cover to see what I was doing.

is there something i have to peel back or remove from the bottom of the car if i want to get to the bitch-bolt? i haven't had time to check it yet and i'm trying to review some CAI or bumper-removal instructions to see what needs to be taken off. thanks!

You'll need to undo the clips holding the undertray to the bumper and you still won't really be able to see it. I just reached in there with my hand and traced from the resonator over until I got to the bolt.
