WTH is wrong with people these days?..

Last night after my classes, I went to pick up my car from my apartment complex. When I got there, there was a note under my windshield wiper and a gigantic ugly key scratch (at least 20 cm long) on my hood. The notes read:

Hey you,

Learn how to f***king park your car.

Sincerely,
The neighbor you screwed over with your half-a**ed parking, you a**hole

I cannot believe there are people like this even in small town like Ann Arbor. I did parked between spots, but on my one side, it's already occupied by snow pile from the road and I parked as far as possible from the complex!

I was just wondering, in case like this, how much do you think it will take to get it repainted?

and if I leave it for 2 or 3 months (I won't get money till end of Jan. for work) will it rust because the clear coat is messed up?

and should i even bother reporting to the police?

I got the letter, should i send in for fingerprint testing?

sigh... I just need to vent this out of my system...

EC

Call the cops for sure. It's no skin off your back and you might (not likely but possible) get the satisfaction of making the asshat responsible pay up.

There's no need to worry about rust unless it's down to the bare metal. And even then, I wouldn't be particularly worried.

That sucks. Is there a shortage of parking spots in your complex? Even so, if you had snow piles taking up spots, there's nothing you can do about it, and he/she should understand that.

if there was a lack of parking spots and u took up 2 spots, id say kharma got you.
on the other hand, if there was plenty of parking spots then yeah report to police.

If you cant afford to respray the hood rite now, you could temporarily put a vinyl sticker on it for a temporary scratch to avoid any possible rust issues?

Definitely bring in the cops. Since this individual admitted he was your neighbor, that should make their job easier. They could go door to door, and I'd be willing to bet the perpetrator will crack when facing the cops. Then you can pin his ears back.

Sorry to hear this happened.

He probably had a mid-life crisis or something. I feel for you. He shouldn't have keyed your car. He should have just left a note. File a report to the police.

Thanks guys for all the input, I will file the case either tonight and tomorrow when I have the free time (finals week...).

But how much do you think this will cost? has anybody get their car repainted?

Thanks once again.

A couple hundred for just the hood. You got kind of lucky here because they won't have to feather the new paint into the old paint since they can just spray the whole thing and call it day.

wolverines fans...

Anyhoo, I do hate it when people don't know how to park (although I wouldnt vandalize their car over it).

One guy broke my passenger window b/c I took up 2 spots once (actually they THOUGHT it was 2 spots, but since there are alot of big mexican vans that screw up the parking spacing, i got stuck an awkward sized parking space enough for 1.75 cars).

fuck the world

There's no way that would be cheaper, even if you could find an undamaged hood in the same color.

Report it. Even if you DID intend to take up two parking spaces, what they should have done is just left you a note or called the cops and asked for the parking people to ticket you. Vandalizing your car just seems like going nuclear to me. (I think someone has an anger management problem.)

This is why when we see things we don't approve of, we should consider perhaps the better intention of people, not the worse. Maybe they parked over the lines because the guy next to them was over the line. Maybe they just can't park. ;-)

Call the cops no matter what. I'd be asking the other residents if they've seen anything too. Maybe someone saw him.

Anyhow, I called the police and of course, they said they won't investigate, just gave me a case number for insurance and called it a day.

My apartment didn't have the security cameras and I believe the person did it around 2~4 am so sadly I don't think anyone will stay up that late watching the parking lot and know who did it.

But I am in the process of convincing the management to install cameras because there had been recent break-ins in the parking lot. Guess I am glad that my car hasn't been broken in...

Yea there's another recent thread on here about the guy who parked in a handicap zone and got keyed. Lots of people getting keyed lately.

When they catch people who key cars, they should take all of their keys off of them. Wouldn't that make sense? Oh, you can't drive or unlock your house because they took your keys? Sounds fair.

Happened to the wife today

well, this happened to the wife today.
she parked across two spots and came back to find a note
on her mirror.
in 3rd grade english it basically said not to park across two spaces.
she has three dents, well almost puncture wounds on her car now
and the paint is cracked from the impacts.
poor G35s, only 7 months old, going for it's first body work already.

filed a police report, called the insurance, and it will go to be fixed
next week or whatever.

I blame her.
the parking lot was too busy for her to be doing that.
parking across two spaces is only cool if nobody would ever need
that second space. piss people off, expect their wrath.

glad I keep really low deductables.

Although I usually disagree with any kind of fowl play, I would still have a sense of gratification if I heard someone actually vandalized back. Its all about finding out who did it though. I'm sure more people would re-retaliate if they knew who did it, but the vandals always run away like scared squirrels never to be found. That shows that they know they're wrong. If you seriously believe you are right about a situation, then you won't run away from it.

Just remember the Michael Fay story in Singapore. He deserved it. I can't TOTALLY agree with that because I don't believe in corporal punishment, but the general concept of harsher laws for car vandalism is on the right track.

You know man!?

Too true, too true... tonight, i saw a guy on campus trying to pull out of his parking space with a trash can right in front of him. he went back and forth a few times and finally he got out of the car and snapped and threw the trash can onto the sidewalk while cussing at it. I just don't understand why people like this even exist in my school --- the University of Michigan...

I meet stupid people at the grocery stores all the time. They take forever to buy their shiits. If you don't bring enough money then put the shiits back. It's so simple yet they hold up the entire express line because of this. I was behind this biatch once with more than 15 items, at least 20 plus. Anyways, she thinks 20 cans of campbell noodle soup is considered 1 item...I just shook my head and wait for the biatch to be gone..Good thing I don't have to live with such people, or I would drown them in their sleep.

Like many others said, report it for sure. You don't live in a place with security cameras, do you? Sorry that had to happen. I don't get people sometimes.

As for the person who did it - I've had these senseless acts happen to me before. The only way I can get around it is to think about how miserable this person's life has to be if something like parking too far to one side of the spot sets him off like that. That's someone who leads a very unhappy life. As much as the scratch stinks, at least you're not that person.

Grocery stores, haha. This one guy took like 15-20 things into the "10 or less" express line. When the clerk told him that it was excessive, he flipped out and asked her "what are you going to do, call the grocery police?" He looked pretty stupid.

lol, we should have a thread where we can just complain
about stupid people.
I have sooooo many examples and funny stories...
it's actually not funny now that I think about it. I'm surrounded.

anyway, bodyshop estimate for my G35s that was vandalized is $1400.
I told her to never park in that parking lot again, that's about the best
way I can think of to avoid it.

I park as far away from other cars as possible, leaving many open spots
between me and the next car. that way nobody will even walk near
my car, let alone be pissed about the spot I took. it's nice I live in a city
where I have that option. otherwise I would just park in one spot and pray.

I park at the perimeter, too, there are too many selfish yuppies and slobs that just leave shopping carts by their car, to roll into someone elses ... or coworkers in such a big hurry that they rush into the parking garage at 35 mph. We have "would the person who hit my car please contact..." messages at least every 2 months here. (And we only have about 450 people here.)

If you were parked improperly due to a snow drift blocking the other space, I don't see the problem. But sometimes there are fracktards out there who don't need much of an excuse to act like loonies. Move on.

Hopefully the hood is a simple job of blending the color into the front quarters. Get the deductible level that matches your budget. Don't whine about a few hundred dollars when you're driving a $29,000 car, you won't get much credibility.

Sorry about your G, MMs. I know it stings that your wife parked defensively and someone went out of their way to boink it, and leave a "frack you" note. Maybe it was an accident ("I thought that car wasn't in the adjacent space"), maybe not. But leaving a note and NOT leaving insurance info is just wrong on so many levels.

no, not an accident.
vandalism, straight up.
if you read the note, you too would be sure.
I personally am a vindictive person, and if I knew who did it,
I would go after them personally. If they want to attack my
property behind my back, I'll make sure to respond to their face.

my deductable is only $100 though, so all is fine, I'm not too worried about it.
seeing how the wife drives the G, I'm expecting it to be totaled one of these
days. she's a stereotypical woman driver. she's not allowed near the TSX.

thanks for the comment/concern though. it'll be back to good next week.

BTW, OP, just thinking that because the note sounds like it was a neighbor doesn't mean that's the case. It's just as likely to've been someone from outside your complex on a vandalism binge.

yeah, that's what I suspect too.. and FYI, the handwriting looks like a girl handwriting. if that's the case, I am not surprised because crazy girls are all over the campus. but keying a car just seem like a guy thing...

Well, my deductible is $500, so i am not sure if it's even worth going to insurance. or should I change it down to $100 and then go? and I am never sure how the insurance is going to charge when my insurance period is up (cause i know that they will raise it when accidents happened)

exactly. I park across 2 spaces when driving my car but only if I am doing it at the back of the lot with 50 other spaces around me.

Lowering deductible can raise your premiums... Any claim under a 1000 is most likely not worth reporting because it is just another mark for your insurance company to look at you as a risk and raise your premiums. I live in NY and that is the case hear (we suck for insurance) it may be different for you Either way it sucks to read this thread and hear about stupid people.
