Why a 350Z cargo net?
Why a 350Z cargo net?
I am in the market for a cargo net and have noticed a few TSXers have purchased the 350Z cargo instead of the TSX one. Any reason why? Function? Price? Better product?? Any help is appreciated. Also; where to buy one for a good price if I decide to go that route. Thanks!
i think one of the biggest drawbacks to the TSX one is that you actually have to drill holes to set mounting points. from what i recall, the 350z one can hook up to existing points in your trunk. i could be wrong.
I believe that is the reason why. Plus you gotta remove the inner carpet lining to get access to the area where you need to drill the holes for the mounting points. The 350Z net connects diretly to existing loops in the trunk. It lays flat, but it's good and does the job well of holding things in place.
The 350Z hooks onto the hooks already in the trunk. It lays flat and does a good job of keeping things from sliding around (tools, etc).
It would not be ideal if you were looking to keep items separated in the trunk or keep grocery bags upright. I have a few square velcro bases that keep grocery bags upright.

The holes are already in the body of the car, but you do have to punch out the liner to access them. The reason I won't be re-installing the one from my first TSX into my current one is because it didn't work all that well... wasn't really deep enough or have sufficient tension to hold items upright.
An inexpensive and much more practical alternative is to use one of those plastic storage containers held securely in place with a couple of bungee cords. It's nestled against the back panel of the trunk interior using the rear D-rings in the floor and a couple of holes in the rim of the plastic. The container will accomodate three full grocery bags and additional small items can be placed between the bungees and the outer sides of the box.
I already had the bungee cords so my total investment is ~ $4 and it works better than any net, and there's no need to worry about spills if anything does tip over.

That's why. You can attach the 350Z net to the four mounting points already in the TSX's trunk. The OEM TSX net reqires disassembling your trunk and measuring, drilling, etc. Why bother? I've had the 350Z net for years and it's perfect back there.

I simply called a local Nissan dealership and ordered one at their parts dept. IIRC, there are different sized nets w/ different part numbers (coupe, convertible, roadster?), and only one of them works particularly well.
If you do decide to get it through a local dealership (instead of online suppliers which are probably cheaper but will kill you with shipping), be sure to shop around if you can. Some dealerships (even Acura ones) will price match to a certain extent. Ask them for the lowest price. Dealerships love to charge you a bogus msrp on parts. They make a killing. I've found parts prices for dealerships are different all over the country. For example, I order acura/honda parts from a dealership in Arizona. They typically charge me prices that are 40% less than what I'm charged at a So. Cal. dealership.
I have both types of nets installed (I installed the TSX one first, and 350Z Coupe net second), and I would *highly* recommend the 350Z Coupe net before the TSX net.
There's some pics of both here (and comments) in this thread:

I got my 350Z net on eBay. Make sure you specifically get the 350Z Coupe cargo net, wherever you get it from. The Convertible one won't work, for some reason (at least, that's what I've gathered from reading these forums).
I also own the 350Z coupe net and its perfect. With golf clubs or other stuff, it sits on top and doesn't get in the way like the TSX one would. It also holds down jugs of washer fluids really well, my baseball glove and a few baseballs, etc. Its perfect. Acura SUCKS for making a rediculous net like the TSX one when a basic, readily-available design from the 350Z or other 'universal' nets would work just fine.
I guess they like the money they get from installations of their "special" net. Crooks!
