With '04 AT:

20-25 in town and on mountain roads.
30-32 on the Interstate.

I seldom drive faster than 70 MPH -- and I run my tires at 2 lbs over-inflated.

Not hardly. Guess I exaggerated a bit on my expectations. I tried not to VTEC, started slower from a stop, etc. I did not adhere totally to the "keep it under 3K RPMs" either. I just wanted to see how much of a difference that type of driving would make. I got just a half a point or so better on this tank. So, my conclusion is VTEC rarely, don't launch it at red lights and everything else in between is ok. I don't think sacrificing one MPG or so in order to have some fun is going to break the bank.

I drive conservatively in teh city (with traffic), no high RPMs, etc. and get nearly 29 mpg. But lately (with Shell/BP 93) I've been more aggressive, and my MPGs have dropped. I think driving style can account for some. Someone who's really rip-roaring around probably will never get close to 30 MPG. Just my .

I usually get 22 mpg in the winter and 25 mpg in the summer. My highest was 32 mpg. That was driving from Brooklyn, NY to Atlantic City, NJ and back. I was going approximately 80 mph.

Aside for a carbuerator float problem that occurred one year, it was a dream. And looking at the pic ... it was really well designed and useable. I miss it.

That push-button climate control selector was the bomb. I like my non-Navi TSX for its similiarity in that quadrant.

oh - I also have the price per gallon over the last few years. (Knoxville, TN)
the spikes in price are due to road trips and price dif in Florida

sorry for the multiple posts.

When the TSX light comes on, it doesn't go off unless you turn the car off again. I think once the light is triggered, it stays on until the car is restarted.

If acceleration or uphill triggered the light, then you'd actually have more fuel in the tank than if the light came on while the car was level and at rest. This might account for the discrepancy in what the manual says (2.3 gallons left) and what I and others have observed.

Ok, I've already spent way too much time thinking about this!

Anyone wanna test if the light goes off if you fill up without turning the car off? I know you're not supposed to leave the engine running, but I bet the fuel light would not go off.

Honda was even self-consious about gas mileage back then. 41mpg on the highway in an 82 Accord?

Yeah, I think the sensor (in my 1982 Accord) was near the sump of the gas tank, and the way that I presume the tank was shaped, fluid would slosh into and out of the area where the sensor was located. I had the service manual, and looked it up, but I've forgotten now (25 years, wow, my life is flashing before me). IOW, IIRC, when I slowed down or aimed downhill, the light would go on, then on level ground it would go off. I remember measuring how much I'd fill up with when the light stayed on in all attitudes, and it was close to what the manual mentioned.
... Anyone wanna test if the light goes off if you fill up without turning the car off?
Um ... no. I don't need to know the specific behavior of the sensor, and don't recommend anyone try risky stunts to find out more (like filling up until gas overflows from the filler neck). Just how much gas is left when the sensor goes off. Just filling up like I did the other day with the light going on right at the pump is sufficient.

My bad. Temporary lapse of judgment. And, as you said, it doesn't really matter when the light comes on.

It really does not take much effort. When you fill up, write the mileage on the receipt, and put in the glovebox. Thats it.

Then later, whenever you have free time, take them all out and put it in a spreadsheet.

Like I said, I'm way too lazy.

Good for you though, it's a good way to see if there's something wrong with your car and/or bad gas, and it's just plain interesting (to me at least).

Fueleconomy.gov lets you upload a spreadsheet of values to log your mileage and chart it ... which provides an easy way to track. I have the Excel file on my PDA, even. Just kinda curious how my mileage tracks.

after 3 weeks of scientific study*, here's my gas mileage:
car: 2005 TSX, 6MT no nav
location: atlanta, ga

Week 1: 28.9 mpg
Week 2: 29.8 mpg
Week 3: 28.5 mpg

gas: Shell premium, 93 octane
I drive 400 miles a week; about 75% of that is interstate.

*Week 2: I didn't go over 70mph unless I could do a NASCAR draft behind an SUV or full-size pick-up. I used weeks 1 and 3 as a control by driving as I usually do.

I get similar mileage -- are you going by the MID or doing your own miles driven / gallons filled calculation.

I'm totally surprised by everyone's numbers! I seem to have this mis-conception that MT cars got better gas millage but it doesn't seem so here...

I've got an AT and I've been getting better gas millage after getting new wheels! Any how, my average is about 27 mph. Occasionally, I confirm the MID calculation and it's usually pretty on. I mostly drive freeway, but I do get out on the roads too. Before getting new wheels, I was averaging about 24 MPG. I'd say I'm a moderate driver (aggressive when given the chance...)

Oh and I went from 17" RSX-S wheels to 18" GT-C's with 245's in the rear (please don't ask...)

I think your 5th gear in the AT keeps the revs a little lower than our 6th in the MT.

I went by my own calculations.

Hmmm. I have an MT and my overall average is about 28. I've gotten almost 36 on the highway on a 300 mile trip (MID indicated 37.5) .

I fell off the top tier wagon and put some 93 octane gas in from a "Fuel Stop" outfit. My engine felt less responsive and "zippy," leading me to stomp the gas a bit more. I put about 5.4 gallons of Costco 93 octane, and my mileage for that 5.4 miles of crappy gas was ~24 mpg. I think that place was selling lower octane gas, or lower quality gas. Never again.

Just drove from VA to MI and back. 1200 miles round trip averaged 30.5mpg. Average speed around 82mph.

2004 6MT with 97K miles.

Filled up on Friday with another tank of Shell 93. Got 32.5 MPG on that tank (80% hwy;20% city). I continued pumping after initial shutoff (same pump I have been using all along) and was able to put another 1.3 gallons into the tank. This time I did see some gas, although none spilled out onto the car. That means that once the indicator light comes on you have roughly 3.5 gallons left in the tank. I am driving an '04 AT, BTW.

It could also be that they are using ethanol to boost the octane, which will also cost you mileage...

The past week, a couple of days, I've set my trip odometer (B) to 0 when I start my drive in the morning. Both days, 2006 5AT with all tires at 30psi, by the time I'm getting off the streets leading from the interstate to the work campus, the MID is showing something like 32-34MPG. As it is generous by about 1 MPG on average mileage calcs from fill-ups, it looks like I'm getting up to 33MPG on my 18 mile commute (maybe it's longer). Woot. Yippee. Yeeha, etc.

Yeah, I pulled off 30.8 in mostly highway driving + some fun city driving (read: VTEC often). I just couldn't grandpa it this tank...

This thread is funny... we're all trying to get good mileage, but that really isn't a selling point for this car (at least, compared to something like the Prius or Fit).

Part of the reason we purchased a TSX was because of the chance (now experienced reality) of averaging 30+ mpg.

Our TSXs give us more of the Honda/MB experience we've become "spoiled" by and BETTER mileage to boot. To think we even considered/test drove a Jeep, CR-V, and RDX now seems almost silly. CR-V and RDX are nice vehicles but don't come close to TSX mileage.

While old fogeys like us don't drive as agressively as many of you appear to, we do "punch it" every now and then. The way the TSX handles means we won't have to slow down as much on curves. It just seems to "know" where to go.

I've never been a "fun" car guy, but I must admit I look forward to and WANT to drive the TSX.

I AM. Spent 20 years in a Jeep, what'd's that tell ya. And owned an MGB for a year in college, and an Accord LX hatchback for a while.

I feel the exact same thing. I find that when I'm leaving in teh morning (a bit) and when I'm leaving work in teh evening (really feel then!), I start smiling because I know I get to drive my li'l TSXy car. (Cue Beach Boys' "409.") I punch it when I need to, and roll into curves a lot faster than I have in anything since my MGB. In all, I'm a lot more assertive on the road than I could in a straight-6 Jeep YJ. I find that with my 20 mile interstate/city commute, I can rock 'n roll a few times a day, and still get > 25 MPG. Some weeks, I'm getting ~ 29 MPG average. That WAS a big selling point on this car to me, it's why I jumped at it after test driving a couple of comparable V6 Accord coupes. 5 MPG better was nothing to sniff at, and worth $2000-$3000 more. (It's one of the top 5 things about the RSX that got me looking at Acuras). When i started shopping, more than 1/2 of teh cars i looked into got eliminated from the running due to shitty gas consumption figures in real-world reviews.

Since we started these threads, I'm beginning to grasp that what fuel I put in the tank is at least 1/3 of the equation of mileage along with my driving style. I can put crappy fuel in there, "drive like Grandpa," and still get shitty mileage. Innnnteresting.

BTW, today I let teh MID tell me the mileage after driving 65-70 MPH on the interstate, and 20 miles later claimed I got 35.6 MPG. Not a boast, just an FYI.

summer has come. I am experiancing similar MPG with A/C as without A/C without even decreasing performance. rpm is moving at same rpm as before.
