TSX driving habits.

Hello all,

I'm just curious how you all tend to drive your TSX's. Do you tend to get it on it a lot, or just drive it somewhat normal? Do most of you shift gears manually, or just let the automatic mode do it for you? I'm just curious how much everyone beats on their TSX.. I use to drive mine nicely, but lately I've been getting on it more... I figure since it's a Honda engine, it will be able to hold up

I drive agressively to get into the clear, where I can then drive relaxed. I hate having other cars around me when I can see daylight ahead. Maybe I'm claustrophobic.

I had an RSX that I drove like a jackass. I find myself babying my TSX more than I thought I would. She is fun to open up, though. Also, mine's a 6MT. I think I'm supposed to drive it harder.

That's probably what it is. I'm surrounded by them here where the 57 and the 60 meet.

I am the exact same, I drive very aggressively, always on the gas! Which has lead to very, very poor gas millage recently. Ahh well maybe once I get my new suspension in I will learn to take it slow over those bumps.

I drive her nicely most of the time. I like to play a little game where I try to eek out the most mpg I can. I got 34 mpg doing 75 on my trip to DC over the weekend.

Nice and easy most of the time. I have an AT which I let do the shifting approx. 90% of the time. On the occasion where I need to pass someone, or the odd onramp, or if I just want to make an aggressive move to clear some traffic I'll switch it over to SS.

This reminds me that I haven't done a roadtrip in a while. There aren't any twisties in Long Beach.

I have a 6mt, I usualy drive moderately aggressive because the manual transmission makes driving agressive fun. In third gear the car accelerates pretty quick and then slows down just as fast when you let off the gas. However driving in third for too long wastes a lot of gas so I'll ease up before too long. I make a point not to piss people off though, unless they're leaving ten car lengths infront of them and blocking up traffic or something like that.

I shift my gears manually, because I have no other choice.

If I can maintain control over my jackass tendencies, I drive very conservatively; I frequently shift into neutral and coast into a red light (if there's nobody behind me) to try to increase my mileage. I'll coast down hills on the highway (always at least at the speed limit), etc. That's 85-90% of the time, these days. I've gotten better than 30mpg in 80% around town driving like this.

If I can't maintain control - typically because I encounter someone on the road whom I deem a goddamn idiot - I drive fairly aggressively, taking it north of 6k in the first three gears, sometimes to red, aggressively down shifting and clearing through traffic. This makes up the difference.

I'm claustrophobic too b/c I tend to want to be in the clear. Sometimes instead I'll hang back and watch everyone else get their blood pressure up... someday I hope to be able to do this 98-100% of the time.

When I was in my 20's I was much more of a jackass, so I've made some progress towards non-constant road rage behavior, which I have to say is a good thing.

I drive mine very conservatively. Its my easy rider luxury cruiser. Only time I see vtec, is if I am entering a highway. When I am in my moded 06 Miata, then I drive like I stole it, with the cops behind me. :-)

I drive like an old man - shifting the 6MT around 3K. Sometimes the torque-monster SUVs get impatient behind me at the stoplights (though I love the pull of 2nd gear ) I thought that I would at least wait until the first oil change to tap into the fun range of the tach.

I find myself driving much more aggressively in my beater "Make my Day" truck - 14 years old, 242K miles, with no top-gear acceleration and questionable stopping power...

I drive mine pretty conservatively. Mainly because the DBW sucks the fun out of the 6MT!

Thanks a lot Acura for ruining a perfectly good car with that fine piece of engineering!!

There, fixed it. I have a 6MT which I drive conservatively maybe 60% of the time. I try to get good gas mileage, but in this city it's pretty much impossible. When the roads are clean and the weather is cold the car is REALLY responsive (for obvious reasons) and I love to let her loose. I also like to get away from the idiots and that's a great excuse because they're everywhere.

Supposedly being in gear with yourfoot off the gas uses less gas than being in neutral with the engine idling. If you coast in gear it's quite possible that the no gas is being used at all.

It's also bad to come to a stop in neutral because the lack of engine resisitance causes you to where out your breaks faster. I usualy slow the car by downshifting regressively and barely have to touch the break at all until the very end

When there is an open road I drive normal like 5-10 over. If in traffic I drive more aggressively because I detest traffic and want to get ahead.

This is true - engine braking can be better. But with DBW it may continue to keep the butterfly open to some degree and fuel going... so this would confuse things IMO. I read what you posted (i.e. in-gear is better) recently on a EPA hyper-mileage site and have moved to that some of time, but old habits die hard. Those guys are scary with how much they try to push the mileage of their (hybrid) cars... some are at +100mpg. They suggest to put it in neutral and turn off the engine.

But if you are coasting to a stop you generally are going slow once you start to brake anyway, which is the case for me, or even better, I coast into a red and it turns green before I get there, at which point I maintain momentum. Also it's six of one and half a dozen of the other... you will replace your syncros and/or clutch sooner and I will replace my brakes sooner. Which is cheaper?

I drive conservatively when others are in the car but if I'm solo the trip isn't complete without hitting the high cam a few times and hearing the tires squeal around an on-ramp or two (So long as it is safe to do so of course...)

I drive conservatively most of the time. I try to maintain around 70 MPH on the freeway (with the help of cruise control) when going to and from work so I can get decent gas mileage. Every now and then I'll catch myself doing 80-90 MPH and not realize it!

When I'm in the country I like to "spice things up" every once and a while.

For the most part, I try to treat my TSX very well. I want it to look clean as long as it can!

I doubt the wear on the clutch comes close to the wear on the brake pads, a half second meshing up versus the drawn out time it takes to brake. Coming to a stop in neutral feels less safe because the car won't stop as fast, you're out of gears and can't accelerate suddenly if the need arises and I just hate the thought of needlessly inflicting all that wear on the brake pads when puting it into some gear is all too easy.

I try and behave-- especially with the cold temperatures and my mileage tanking because of it... I will admit I do have a bit of a weakness for corners...
I do tend to drive a bit over though (only when conditions allow, of course)... Hence why I got a "fun" car but not too sporty-- I know I'm not disciplined enough to go slow, so if I had a car (like my guy's WRX) which gets profiled by cops when he's not doing anything, I'd spend a lot of time on the side of the road. :P

Though, last night I finally got the TSX to drift behind the ice arena!! (big, empty parking lot, not usually cleared of small layers of snow) Only did it the once on the way in, but that was fun. And on the way home I put it in "manual mode" and launched up the onramp onto the highway in... 1st I think... I may have gone to 2nd when it redlined, didn't notice though as that kick at the end was pretty exciting! (I figured, heck, the car's warmed up, there's no traffic, why not?)

I take it easy for the first 10 minutes or so. When the engine's warmed up, the fun begins. I don't redline but I do drive somewhat aggressively. I mean it is a sporty enough car to do it right?
