Time to change the oil....
Time to change the oil....
Hey everyone. So my new TSX is ready for its first oil change. It has 5300 miles, so it got me wondering...
How many miles do you all normally get in between oil changes? 5300 is pretty good in my opinion...
Do you all recommend every 3000 miles or is the maintenance minder really accurate?
Thanks.

Purchased Mobil 1 5w-30 from Walmart for $19 total and let the dealer changed out my oil. Notice an increased in mpgs of 1/2 -3/4 extra mpgs per gallon.
I stick with the MID schedule. Switch to Mobil 1 just for piece of mind, regular oil would work just as fine if you follow MID schedule. Every 3000 miles would be every 45-60 days for some of us.

I also use Mobil 1 synthetic and wait for my oil to go down to about 35% and then change it again just for piece of mind. I think I got close to 6K miles between oil changes and the way I drive, it takes about 4 months or more to reach that point.

My 04 mainenance schedule, regular useage, says every 10K miles or once a year, whichever is sooner. I use Mobil1 from Walmart and take it to the dealer (just like mrgold35) and pretty much stick to the scheduled intervals above.

Mobil 1 is fine, but a waste unless you're going for a longer change interval. I would never and I mean never leave the filter in there for 10k miles. I used Mobil 1 in my s2000 for a couple of years but that engine loved to use it up. I went back to dino oil and had no more problems. I had similar experiences with my TL and CL Type S. I had some Mobil 1 5w30 left, so I tried it in the TSX at 6000 miles. So far, it's not using much. I'll keep watching. Today's conventional oils are so good that I don't see the benefit in paying a lot more for syn oil.

So far my MID has been averaging between 5500 to 6000 mile between oil changes. I don't think the MID knows the difference between reg and syn oil. I usually run the oil indicator completely down to 0% and sometimes into negative numbers/mileage. I was over by +700 mile on my last oil change (out of town in AZ for weekend trip).
Mobil 1 might be over kill; but I drive the TSX between 1100 feet above sea level in Phoenix to 11,000 feet in Colorado on I-70; 0 degree F in Taos, NM, and +120 degrees in Phoenix with the cruise control between 75-85 mph average just in the last 16 months.
I just figure I have a buffer of 1500-2000 miles on an oil change using Mobil 1 compare to the average conventional oil. Makes me feel better at least.
If the "oil life" readout indicates a change is due every 6000 miles on average I'd say that covert the extra cost of premium gas right there.
I've heard the "change oil every 3000" miles rule was dreamed up by motor oil producers.
