Thunk!

After owning our TSX for three months, I still can't get over the sound the doors make when they close; a solid THUNK!!! This car just oozes with quality and class!

The back doors don't make such a big thunk though, more like a "think"

I noticed when I went to honda their accords made in usa... are more padded then our tsxs in japan...

Now my parents are bias against usa manufactured car, so they would have problems if the tsx was not 95%japan 5 else where.

Do you guys think we can get thicker rubber padding between the doors?

In my experience, which is only through the cars on the lot and showroom floor, the "thunk" or "thump" is only heard at a light-to-moderate closing force. In other words, if you close the door too hard, it will sound like a tin can. When my car arrives, I will have to get used to the lighter closing force as I come from a mid-90s two-door American car with doors that will give you a workout.

IMO, TSX doors sound much more solid than a lot of other cars I drove :-)

Try having one of the doors or windows open while shutting another one - see how you like that.

I notice I don't always get the "thump" when closing the door on my TSX. It does depend on the force used to close it.

Nice and solid when the doors close, not like a tin can sound, which is good....it makes the car feel it was nicely built.

I originally thunk it sounded pretty solid too, but after my two kids started slamming the doors closed, especially with windows down, it didn't sound as solid. So I thunk about it and threatened them with bodily harm if they slam too hard ...of course they know it's an idle threat and I wouldn't actually wack em but they got the message.

Overall though, it is a solid little car and we still love it.

I always have to tell people to close them lightly, because they are used to their cars where you have to close them much harder.

Does anyone listen to Click and Clack on Saturday morning on NPR? They have had several callers say that the side airbag has deployed when closing the door with great force (like out of anger). Has anyone else heard about this happening?

Are those people talking about that on the TSX?!?!?!

No, other cars were mentioned. But, Click and Clack stated it can happen on any vehicle, because the airbag senses the force of impact. If you slam the door hard enough, it will consider it a hard impact :0

I guess that makes sense... though it better be a REALLY REALLY REALLY hard slam for that to false trigger! Like what Mr. Incredible could do...

Seriously, this cannot happen if the engine is shut off and key out of ignition, right??

Pisses me off, my girlfriend, who BTW is part owner of the car, slams the door all the time. I can't get her to stop. I guess it comes from owning a F150 for 4 years.

I don't know if this is off-topic, but people don't usually slam on my doors; they slam on my trunk! The obvious reason is there are many cars out there whose trunk is just so freakin hard to close, such as the new Altima, so some people are trained to slam the trunks shut because that's the only way they can do it for their own cars.

BTW, whoever said the backdoor sounds more solid than the frontdoor, I agree.

Yes! Every time I drop my wife off at work I cringe in anticipating her slamming the door. I sound dampened them so it's more of a "thunk" than a "thump" and a little less annoying, but still drives me crazy.

I was thinking the exact same things this morning when I dropped her off. She slammed it again of course, it makes me so :silvermad

An Interesting exerpt from an Acura TSX Press Release...

DOOR CLOSING SOUND
Some of the most powerful luxury cues a car can give its owner are almost completely subconscious. One example is the sound of a door closing. Acura engineers methodically refined the design of the door sashes of the TSX (the surrounding door structure) to reduce high-frequency resonance excited when the doors are closed.

The door latches themselves are carefully engineered to latch securely with a light closing pressure, and to emit a quality sound.

Acura engineers also designed a special "bumping door seal" that purposefully transmits a certain low-frequency vibration to the door itself. This desirable vibration is heard as a substantial sound as the door closes, evoking the impression of substance and quality.

Even tiny details like a door checker-the mechanism that limits the door's maximum opening-play a part in perceptions of quality. That's why the TSX doors use a new type of checker that lets the door open more fluidly, yet has a pronounced detent at intermediate, partially open positions.

I wish I had the sound clip of the Car and Driver show doing a comparo that included a Legacy GT. The guy closed its door and the thing sounded like someone smacked the side of an aluminum garbage can with a bat

Nice to know about the potential airbag deployment if you shut doors too hard. Not as bad as the Jetta's side bags which have been going off on drivers going over bumps. Talk about a shocking experience. Re: the thunk--I remember reading somewhere that the TSX engineers were quite conscious of this new door-sound standard of quality and spent mucho dinero and time perfecting it. I think they succeeded.

The good Dr's. quote two posts up is the one I'm talking about. Posted before reading it. And nice to see mention of Click and Clack--these guys are national treasures. Have learned more of an automotive nature from those guys the past few years while splitting my sides in laughter, than from almost any other source. (Even the A-zine and Edmunds)!
