Register your headlights

Hey all,

General question for everyone. Is Acura participating in the program where the headlights are being registered with the DOT?

Before everyone starts to laugh and make jokes, let me tell you why I ask. I friend of mine just got back from getting his Lexus RX330 serviced, and was told that they put on a headlight protection kit. He said he was unawared of it, but apparently it is a new program Lexus was rolling out because people were complaining that their HIDs were being stolen. He hasn't really given me details and I haven't seen it yet, but he said something about them registering a number with the DOT and reinforcing the headlight mounting brackets.

This would be great considering we have begun to see more and more threads regarding our lights being stolen. Anyone with more info?

I think it would good (although not all that effective against theft) if Acura can implement a similar program. We ought to start a petition if we want this in place. It's starting to become a concern for me as I see 5-10 listings on ebay everyday of our headlights, and ppl doing 'tsx projector mods' to their 94 Civic.

it makes sense. Like when you used to register your bike when you were a kid.

In case your lights do get stolen and end up in someone's car, they can bust him for receiving stolen property.

But the problem is are they registering the "headlight" assembly or the bulbs and ballast, which are the essential parts that ricers want since the headlights itself couldn't be fitted onto another car unless it's the same design (like the prev. gen. maxima headlights).

When thieves jack headlights do they take other high cost parts like the control unit #9 in pic (aka ballast ?) and HID bulb (#8) ?
or they just take the main headlight unit ?

I would assume that they would take the ballast and the bulb too.

Yeah that ... 3 most important parts.

Interesting concept though for protecting your lights.

Why would DOT have anything to do with theft of our headlights? DOT only approves their uses.

i'm in the commercial real estate industry and for laptops in office spaces, they use invisible ink (only can see under blacklight) to mark the laptop with a number that is linked to the NYPD, so if a laptop is ever retrieved or found, they know who it belongs to.

maybe we can start something similar to the ballasts?

they also put a sticker on the laptop that says something to the effect that this laptop has been marked and is registered with the NYPD.

i know its not fool proof, but its a preventative measure thats 1 step ahead of a laptop that has not been registered.

please elaborate

I don't get this. I used to have a 99tl (had my lights stolen) and I knew that all 2nd Gen TL's and CL's had problems with stolen lights. I was under impression that lights on the 3rd Gen TL's and TSX's are more difficult to take off since the hood and the fender overlap the cage where the lights are.

I saw the sad post regarding TSX's in the housing complex but nothign like the stories of TL's and CL's back in the day...

So does this story continues?

Whats not to get? If a thief knows what he's doing, nothing is hard to steal.

But let's be realistic. Old TL's and CL's had lights taken off left and right. I mean it took seconds to pry them out. Here, an entire car has to be taken appart. Crap, do I have to be paranoid again? I thought this shit was over... WTF...
